The minie rifles had very shallow rifling 3-5 thousandths. PRB rifles have deeper rifling so minie doesn't seal well
Have to slam them harder which often calls for a thicker skirt, depending of course upon where you started and where you're going.
Lyman made thicker skirted molds in the past just for the stout of heart and shoulder.
Trying out their thick skirted .54 minie in a Lyman GPR was surprising. Then a barrel maker pointed out that a deep groove barrel will shoot "conicals" just fine.
Since then figgered out that the unspoken punch line was that you have to figger out how to make it work.
My uncle had a Investarms .54 cal. Hawken with a 1-66" barrel that shot Hornady Great plains bullets awesome. Amazed me.
