Melted down some of my scrap lead today.

Did 4 pots of scrap lead today. Made close to 230lbs. Had a couple of wheel weights that were floating( thankfully) when I went to stir in the saw dust. Good thing I keep a close eye on things. Almost had zinc in the lead.

    Good catch!
I'll bet those stacks of ingots sure look better than those buckets of wheel weights did?

Good job. Wish i had a big pile of ingots. I need to melt down several hundred pounds of scrap/jacketed bullets and 6 or 7 buckets of wheel weights. Just haven't had time and now it's turning off hot. Might have to wait til fall. Need to get the storage area cleaned up though.

A couple of zinc ww in 30# of alloy wouldn't bother it much, but I always sort & keep the pot temp around 700deg for melting.

I've never had a zinc melt on me. Didn't even realize it was an issue. I always scoop off clips and stuff as the lead melts and zinc floaters are obvious and always come out easy.

Yup, if you don't get the melt too hot, the zinc weights just float like the rest of the junk.

A few zinc weights won't ruin a batch of lead, but I'm very meticulous about sorting weights and try to have 0% in my melt. Good catch and good job.
