    22 cal partition

Customer and I got to discussing wether a 22 cal partition bullet would be possible using two 22lr jackets, so I gave it a try.

Used a standard 22lr jacket for the back half with about 30 grains of lead in the base then core seated a 20 cal jacket (sized down 22lr jacket) with about 40 grains of lead in it to make a 90 grain partition.

Turned out pretty good. Don't know how the field or target results would be, might need to bond the base lead and 20 cal jacket in place somehow but it worked.

In the sectioned picture the outer jacket gave way while the mill machined it down.

Again not sure the reason for such a bullet but it does go to show when you have the dies nearly any bullet you can think of is possible. Matter of fact "Bullshop" here used the same technique to make a heavy 6mm bullet from two jackets that I recall shot pretty well for him.

    Good shooting and swage on!

I bet if you added a canalure groove it may help a bit too in the performance of such a bullet.

yep.... heavier bullet could be accomplished with 22 mag or 17 HMR brass as well and that brass is thicker and therefor stronger then the 22lr jackets.

For those of you thinking about it I do NOT recommend attempting to derim 22mag or 17 HMR brass in the 22lr derim die (.219). You will eventually pull the derim punch from the base of the base punch because of the thicker wall of the 22 mag brass. I offer a 22mag specific derim die for the task.

Just a thought, probably a little trickier, maybe for a lighter partition, use a short cup upside down inside the 22 case to cover/surround the lead? One might need another draw die to make it fit though?

That is the normal procedure (at least to me), for .22 cal you take a .20 cal jacket/core seated to completely fill the jacket or seat the core and then trim the jacket, draw to .200 (or what your .22 cal jacket ID is). Drop into .22 cal jacket upside down and seat, then seat your normal lead core and point up.
