    New 629-6

    Was browsing one of my local fun stores and came across a 6-1/2" full underlug 629 with nice checkered rosewood laminate grips. Supposedly this was a Talo exclusive but is now just the deluxe model.

    Sure it has the Hillary Hole, MIM and a RB frame, but it's now my HH, MIM, TB abomination that I won't feel bad about hammering on as opposed to a nice P&R 29. Still on the lookout for one. Had one, had issues with it rotating backwards that a trip to Smith didn't fix 100%, so down the road it went with full disclosure.

    For a steady diet, I do have a nice Ruger Redhawk, which I love, but it ain't no smith.

    So now the process starts with load development and seeing how she runs. Range Report to follow.

    Congrats on your new Smith. You will enjoy that one, Hillary hole and all! I've found that a good accuracy testing load is 18 to 19g of 2400 and the old 429421 sized to .431 regardless of what your throats measure. I have 3 ea 629 Smiths that have .4285" throats, and I shoot that load in all with very good accuracy and no leading.

    Sounds like a good one. I like the longer barrel and full under lug. That added weight has to help with the recoil. I have 629s in 3" and 4" that are just too much of a handful to enjoy on a regular basis. You could shoot that one with lighter loads all day long. I like the way the short ones look but I like the way the longer ones shoot. (-:}

    You can do it again when you're 72--I'm closing in on it.
    Congratulations on your new gun--hope it exceeds expectations.

    As expected the TB load was a hoot to shoot. The 2400 gave me a huge fireball. Accuracy at 15 yards standing was good. Can't wait to get her on the real range on a rest with some load development.

    Call me Kreskin but somethings tells me you've seen that done before - those are some wonderful first targets!! Great find on a beautiful gun and fantastic shooting! And yes, 2400 is a very accurate powder in the .44 but does have a bit of flash and with a high enough dose some recoil.

    Gives you that giddy feeling when they all go into one wad, right in the center---doesn't it! Id say you are on the right track with 2400. A lot of people on this site hold HS-6 in high regard for 44's as well. I'd try it too but I have an 8lb'er of 2400.

    This was a Talo special run but I'm sure there are plenty out there

    I'll have to try some HS-6
