    explain please

seems like every time someone asks a question about preheating a boolit mold, someone come out with "I got mine at Wal Mart for 10 bucks".

now explain to me how this little Po-dunk town with barely 100k in it can have not one, but TWO Wal Marts, and neither one of them has a ten dollar hot plate.

Got mine at the Dollar Store for about $11-12 about 2-3 months ago.

Here is a link to one at a Dollar General:

Single burner at Wally for $14-15:

Another Single burner at Walmart for around $16:

Double burner at Walmart about $19:
    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Imusa-Gau...1500W/38445608

Here is a page where you can find more at Wally:

    Hope that helps...
    G'luck!

P.S.- You may have to order them online if they do not carry in your stores on the shelf. I don't think there is any shipping if you have delivered to the store. You will have to read up on that stuff if ya want one.

mine was $1 at a thrift store...the junkier the thrift store, the more likely you find a old cheap one.
but if you are stuck on walmart, order online, and pickup at the store.

There are lots of items that only the largest Walmart has on the shelf and no guarantee even there. Go on-line and order what you want. Usually within 3-5 days you get an Email to come pick it up. Ezy Pezy.
While there I usually check the kitchen wares for casting tools.
    Information not shared. is wasted.

agreed that on-line is way to go.

shipping is free to store, though there is tax on that

Mine was $10 but that was a few years ago. Found one today that is $14+ on line

Online is the easy way. Throw some ammo in your cart to get over 35$ total for free shipping. Easy peasy.

Shrug I had to visit 2 but I found one on the shelf here in houston. I'd use the ship-to-store for free pickup if you want it that bad. Any old hotplate will work that was just the cheapest I found.

I went to two stores before I found the $10.00 one. It seems that the stores here stock 3 models. I'm not sure how long a $10 hot plate will last. An older used one might be better but after going to several places I gave up and went with a new one.

the only reason i shop at wal mart is because it is CHEAP. it's not that big a deal. i just thought it ironic that i got two stores within about eight miles of my house, and neither had a cheap hot plate. but thanks for the ideas !

Just be sure to get one with a solid top instead of the exposed coil. Much better, especially for 1-2 cavity molds.

That is the one I got from the Dollar Store, I think. Cost me a couple bucks more. But it is a 21 mile one way trip to the Wally World & only a mile or so to a Dollar store. One thing I will tell ya though. That cooker on high got so hot that when I was preheating a 2 cav, 356-120-TC , while I was running the 45 cal stuff switching back & forth from two 2 cav molds that thing got so hot that the lead I put into the lil 356 mold as I was preheating, ran out & onto the burner recess after it sat there a lil while...
No trouble though. I turned it down, tipped it to have the lead run off into a muffin pan & started over with the thing set on MED. from then on.

True stuff. IT is still running fine.

    Just go get one.

Mine popped its thermal fuse after a while, but they are just crimped in, easy to replace.

    Good to know! Thanks!
I am tempted to put a old cast iron spider I have on that thing & put it on High again to see if it will do the job for melting lead while I am running casts. If it can, I will go get another one of them burners from the Dollar store...

Update: I was in Wally World chasing after some stain for my ever in progress Hobby room. Decided since I was there getting two stroke oil too, to lube molds with, I might as well check and see if they got any hot plates in. I almost bought the double burner one, can't remember what brand it was, but the did have the mainstays one in stock so I got one of those. ($9.96?) I am pretty sure it's the one Soundguy is talking about. It did have the coil type element, so I found a 1/2" piece of stainless already cut into a round shape and the perfect size, at the scrap yard to set between the element and molds, or anything else.

Keep up the good work Guys !
