PC bullets in a ruger carbine?

new rifle I picked up last year haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but having fun loading for it. From what I've read you're not supposed go use Lead cast bullets in them but would powder coated ones keep from leading the gas ports?

I'm sure they'd work fine in that regard. More important will be sizing them correctly to the barrel. My .44 Winchester is at least .002 larger than normal .44 barrel dimensions and finding bullets it likes is a chore. Gonna try some new ones today, in fact.

most manufacturers no longer recommend lead in anything. and none recommend reloads.

but i shoot cast pc out of my highpoint with no issues.

I have a Ruger in 44 Mag and it shoots powder coated cast just fine.

I'm guessing the long gone .44 Ruger carbine that looks like a 10/22.

That is an easy to clean rifle. Powder coating can only make life simpler.

Man those were nice guns! My BIL had one, wish I'd have snagged it when he sold it years and years ago.

I too am interested in the OPs question. Have the same rifle and looking at powder coated boolits for the first time. Others have had good success with regular gas checked boolits so I don't think powder coating is absolutely necessary. Honestly what got me thinking about it was an active NOE group buy for a nice looking PC boolit.

Well, from what I've heard and read lead will clog up the gas port in these rifles and to only use jacketed bullets.

If the AR15 platform in various calibers with the tiny gastube shoots cast without any problem, the Ruger carbine wont have any problems either.

My thoughts exactly. "Everyone" said not to shoot cast out of my AR15. I have close to 1000 rounds of lead through mine now with no problems. I think the Ruger will be just fine.

I really don't know where the idea of gas port leading actually came from. People have been shooting Cast Boolits in Garands for 50 years + and nobody has a had a problem.

In order for this to happen, lead would have to be shaved off the boolit as it passes the gas port. The only way this could happen is if the gas port had a burr on it.

If the gun has had any amount of Jacketed bullets shot thru it, (like ALL Garands have had) then that hole would have been deburred many times over. Also the sharp edge that once was there when the gun was new was also burned off by the hot gasses so there is nothing to shave lead.

I could see that if you were trying to shoot undersized boolits without gas checks that you might have a problem, but that is a pretty easy fix that probably wouldn't require much research to solve.

I'd say the worst thing that could happen to a gas operated gun is if the port did get clogged you might just try cleaning it! Instead of worrying about the effects of something that probably won't occur anyway.

One of the reasons to reload is to "Experiment" a little. Lets jump off the cliff here.

It's the original 44 carbine made before the 10/22 not the newer ranch style.

I shot Elmer Keith's load in mine and only that combination. I tried a few j-words once, but never saw a reason to bother again. Many who speak of the issue of cast bullets in the Ruger, clearly never cleaned one.
The gun is easy to take down for a full cleaning. Watch a Youtube video and all will be explained.

I read somewhere that it is recommended to shoot 200 + FMJ rounds through a new gun before going lead / PC or Hi-Tek coating
