I just got the scope mounted on a 788 that I bought here on SS
it is 6mm caliber and a real shooter only tried one powder bullet combo
in it so far and most all of the 5 shot groups were a 1.5" or under some
made me smile real big

I've had a 788 in 6mm since I was 12 , there is no arguing with how well they shoot .
Groups do open up with the pencil barrel if you let it get hot , but mine will shoot sub moa with varget .
I have had a 243 788 for 40 yrs. Have shot many animals with it. It still shoots good. Was a good gun for the money.
In my youth I had a 788 in .243. Used to shoot mostly 30 grains of Dupont 3031 under a Hornady 60 gr BTHP. That load was lights out for crows out to 400.
Made the mistake of letting a friend borrow it, he got busted for shining deer and lost it and a Ruger .44 mag carbine. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest his armpits. May the blue bird of paradise fly up his nose, struggle, die, rot, and small bad for all his life.
Deer spot lighters are just the type to take advantage of a friend. Oh sorry, that's profiling.
I would love a 6mm 788. I always considered it the best 6mm- and I've had three .243s at once!
Best, Thomas.
I have a 6mm 788. Almost spooky how accurate it is. Mine really liked 100 grain boat tails and Winchester 760/H-414.
When they first came out, I purchased several for my sons to hunt with. Got a 243, 7-08 and a left handed 6 mm Rem. I have gave all of them to the sons for their children to shoot.
Have made a 6BR and a 30 BR from 788 rifles over the years.
All have shot very well.
Twenty-five years ago her 788 in 7-08 was the first center fire the better 2/3's ever fired.
I talked her through zeroing the scope.
And she shot a 5/8" group at the 100 yard benches (Carters Country on Treaschwig) with the Speer 130 boat tails.
Woo-woo!
They must be having a come back..... I just picked up a carbine length barrel 7mm-08 for $250. Got the rifle, two clips and a partial box of Hornady ammo. Mounted a Pentax 2x7 scope and can't wait to try it out.

I would love a first year WALNUT 22-250. As well as a .222,.243,6mm,30-30,.308,&.44mag. Might as well dream big.....
Best, Thomas.
My 788 is in .308
Another very accurate rifle. The target below was shot at 100 yards with the 30 Hunter NOE mold.
190gr loaded over 10.5gr of Red Dot for an average of 1325fps
This is a five shot group @ .670"

WACO: that's a fine group!
Decreed by our Creator: The man who has been made able to believe and understand that Jesus Christ has been sent into this world by the Father has been born of the Spirit of God. This man shall never experience spiritual death. He will live forever!
Thank you guys. This rifle eats most anything.

waco, nice! I need to get mine out and give it a workout.
I bought my 308 as a barreled action, NIB, over 20 years ago. Got it thinking I'd play with it in CBA factory BR class. A year later things change, heavy barrel savage 308's become the rifle of choice and the lowly std barrel sporter isn't really competitive any longer.
Mine is a carbine length barrel though, got new wood from Numrich back in the day. Hope it lives up to 75% of what yours is!
Greetings
A 788 in caliber .243 was one of the first rifles we were blessed with after the "Pickle Suit" Brigade. Still have it. Still whaalops whatever gets in front of the barrel with fine accuracy. So after 40+ years it is still on that list that will never, no never leave our "up north there' living time. Remington scored a #10 with the 788's !
