Commemorative .32-40, a special run of nickel plated cased ammunition. There were also nickel .38-55s made. The were for the "Duke" commemorative Winchester 94s that were made in these calibers. I think it was back in the 1980's.

Ammunition in either of these calibers had not been made in years, and, all of a sudden, there it was.

Hindsight is 20/20 or .32-40 in this instance

Hindsight is 20/20. I believe I have about 500 of these. I wonder how much these would be worth if still loaded & in the original boxes?

My perfect hindsight causes me so much grief.

Those empty nickel-plated shells are not exactly worthless by themselves. My box contained empty shells, and I found a bunch more of the same type loose and was glad to get them to shoot with.

I imagine there is "collector value" in an unfired box, but liquidity would be the problem. A guy with a Commemorative rifle (in an unopened box) would want one unopened box of cartridges to go with the rifle. After he is satisfied, finding a collector for the next box of ammo might be harder than finding the box was.

Me, I dunno. I'm not a "collector," just an "advanced accumulator." It's not my fault that the books I bought to read, the guns I bought to tinker and play with and the ammo I stashed away for future needs is now in the "Don't do that--you'll destroy its Collector Value!" category.

Maybe they show up at auctions, but IME this oft-cited Collector, so willing to pay Big Bucks for something I shouldn't be messing with, is as rare a trophy as a 300-lb elephant.

That's great and what I have become. Could not agree more on the "oft-cited collector". I got burned on a Ruger single action once and learned of what it is you speak.

Nice! actually I think that dates back to the 1980's when the commemorative rifle came out. A local gunshop here ended up with a bunch of that ammo back then and was selling at at $7.50 a box so I bought about $50 worth. I turned 1 box into .30-30's, kept another and about 10 years ago sold the rest for about $25 a box as I recall....

I've got a box of this too on the top shelf of my reloading bench. Back in the mid-late 80's, a guy at a NC gun show had a table full and I just couldn't resist. I wish I had bought a box of the 38-55 also....just to have the pair.

When I bought a used CPA 32-40, there were 4 mint boxes of the Wayne Comparatives included in the transaction for free

Just for reference, there was an unopened box each of .32-40 and .38-55 John Wayne ammo for sale at the last Gun Show I attended. It was going for $80 a box. Going, but not gone.
