Melting point would be a good indicator

After you've been hunting a while, you'll just know. I went through the school of hard knocks, but learned a lot on here, and through experience.

Pretty soon you'll know just by picking it up. And maybe giving it a squeeze to see if it bends.

on a hopefully positive note, picked up some lead muffin ingots from the little local scrap guy and the whole bucket full of ingots are all marked with a P, hopefully they will check out to be pewter.

no these are muffin tin ingots with a stamped P, sometimes multiple stamps. I use a potter mold when I make my own pewter ingots to keep them separate.

Or it may be cheap pewter. I'm hoping for that! Let us know!

I still envy you guys that can find pewter. I hardly ever see any around here and when I do it is priced at antique prices. Good Luck Rancher, on that bucket of ingots!

Went to the thrift store and wouldn't you know, a lady was there and had a pile of everything that looked remotely like pewter in the entire store. Oh well.

Experience is such a good teacher! Piece of "pewter" in the pot....check the temp, 700+ and not melting = Not pewter!! Thus endth the lesson.

Experience may be the best teacher, but ya have to see some to get experience. I have found 4 pieces in many years of looking. Two of them were priced like gold, and the other two are long gone to the pot. I too have been tempted by unmarked stuff, but so far resisted. I already have enough useless junk.

I already know about cutting a sliver with a knife and seeing if it will melt with a lighter easily, but how hard is pewter to bend? and if you just bend is a little does it crackle like tin supposedly does?
