    Arisaka 7.7X.300 Savage cookin'

I finally got my Arisaka rechambered in 300 Sav. to accept cast boolits.
    I was presently surprised at the range. That's a 2 inch group with a 1 " cluster.

The load: Lee 185 grain Brit. 303 boolit, sized .313. Alum. Gas checks. Lube: alox/paste wax tumble.
    Pushed by 15.5 grains 2400.

Nice shooting and nice rifle there Blixen,it nice when a plan come together like that. Do you use standard 300 Sav. brass or reform your own for .308 Win. or 7.62 x 51 mm NATO?

I use reformed 7.62 NATO brass in my Sav. 99 in 300 Sav. with 16.0 grs. of 2400 and get just a little less that 100 fps. added MV using the smaller capacity NATO brass over the standard 300 Sav. brass. I also shoot the Lee .312 160 gr. RN tumble lube bullet sized to .311" and gas checked with excellent results.

    Arisaka 7.7X.300 Savage cookin'

I got a bag of once-fired300 sav brass. Mostly winchester. It was cheaper than .308.

I've considered getting that .311 Lee 160 grain for my 30 cals. Thought it might be too light for the Arisaka's twist. Less than 1/10" .

    Pretty group you got there!

I've been looking at a couple Sav.99s but they're priced out of my range. Elegant rifle.

If I remember correctly from years past my M44 has a 1/9.5 twist bore at most it a 1/10 have to research that again.

I know my Sav. will shoot a Lee 90 gr. SWC's,both the Lee 150 and 170 gr. RNFP bullets as well as the Lee 160 gr. TL bullet which ends up being close to 170 grs. as well. It also like 150 gr. and 174 gr. SP's

My Sav.99 is just a plain Jane E series nothing fancy,I bought it new back in the mid 70's for less than $200. The same Lee 160 gr. bullet shoot just as well in my SKS rifle also with a 1/9.45 twist.

    Arisaka 7.7X.300 Savage cookin'

My old lyman Manual puts the Arisaka twist at 9.25".

All the savage 99s I've been eyeing start at $450. Everyone uses Gun Broker as the gospel on prices--not the cash a willing customer has in his hand.

I know what you mean I bought most all my modern so to speak rifles, handguns and shotguns back in the day when they were fairly cheap by todays standards that I could purchase with money I saved up working on the farm during the summers. Since them I bought mostly Mil-Surplus rifles like my SKS's and Mosin's and a PA-63 last one around seven years ago when they were readily available and prices hadn't gotten stupid yet although they had went up some but not much.

The old plain Jane 91/30's are still not bad my M44 cost me $75 delivered now there $230 to $250 and Finn Mosins are close to $400. I was born about 10 years to late to get in on all the good prices. I have an old gun rag from the early 50's with some K98's,M1917 and 1903 Springfield in it for $50 or less and $16 Mosins. Well I'm bless with what I have any ways and there all good shooters so can't complain to much.

Attachment 89486Attachment 89487Attachment 89488I've bought a few military "sporters" over the last couple years--SMLE, Argentine 91, Krag, Arisaka, 7x57 Mauser. So-called collectors consider them worse than worthless, but some of the '50s-'60s gunsmithing is quite good. And they were cheap ($150 or less) and are excellent cast boolit shooters, tapped for scopes and sometimes with receiver sights to boot. I think of them as abused orphans.
Here's some examples (the Arisaka is not well done, but it shoots good):

Same thing I've observed. I've seen some really pathetic home jobs but some of the professionally done sporters especially those involving a re-barrel. Really attest to the quality of 1950 and 60's gunsmithing.
