thank you sharps, I would love it if you would post a pic of that cartridge, I've never heard of it. is it a german gun? and what powders do you prefer for 9.3X62/ 35 whelen class cartridges? (using a 250-300gr boolit)

It's actually an Austrian cartridge out of Innsbruk I think from about 1917, maybe earlier, I forget. From what I've been able to learn it was one of a series of proprietary cartridges developed by Johann Peterlongo. I'm aware of an 8mm and 9mm. I don't know if he ever necked it up to 9.3 but it seems such an obvious thing to do I expect if he didn't someone else did though I've never seen one in 9.3. Peterlongo's rifles were/are exquisite. I think I have a picture, if I can find it and the site will allow my posting.

Ah!! Got lucky! It is the second from the right. Data was non-existent so I had to work up my own and used IMR-4064 for that cartridge under a 200 gr. Sierra round nose. I'm confident a load with either H or IMR 4895 would be just as good. The others are some of the obsolete, obscure and nearly unknown cartridges for which I've been fortunate enough to have acquired rifles chambered. Obsolete only in the sense that they were never popular or even known on our shores. Compared to anything in their class they none lack suitable performance for their intended use. All are German or Austrian save one, the second from the left. No one on 3 continents has any idea bout it.

I suspect IMR or H 4895 would provide good to excellent results in either the Whelen or X62 case. No doubt others would also but honestly I have precious little experience with other brands in cases of that class. There's also a pile of guys who have worked extensively with both cartridges, I have not worked with either. I would definitely be looking at something in the Reloader series. I've used a lot of RE-7 and I really like its performance so would expect similar from one of their powders suitable for the Whelen or X62. My oldest son uses one of the Reloader powders in his 6.5 X 55 and loves it. He also likes H-4831SC for the cartridge.

I like reloader also! but it seems rel 12 is a little fast and rel 15 is a little slow. 15 is popular for the 9.3X62, but with jacketed bullets. so I will probably go the h4198 route, and I will probably change my mind 3-4 time before I get anything! lol, Travis

Second from the left - no one on three continents knows what it it? Have you sent a chamber cast to Dave Davidson at CH4D?

I meant imr4895, not 4198, sorry. my plan is to order a 4 cavity mold from accurate, with 2 285gr, and 2 240-260gr boolits. that way I have a good option for whatever.
