He said his thermometer stayed under 600 so as not to melt any zinc weights.

When you say wheel weights, do you mean stick on (SWW) ?
The only time I've seen that purple color in an ingot was when I was rendering sheet lead. Very pure.
If it's clip on (CWW), then I'm not sure.
As an aside, that's where we get the color 'plum' - from plumbum, Latin for lead.
Which is also where the word plumber comes, a worker of lead.
What kind of wax was it colored wax
Almost looks like dark blue candle wax its blue coulor looks like it is only on the surface
Grease in the mold?
Lead doesn't melt at 550° nor do COWW in my experience.

if I had to guess I'd say ink I have seen something similar when melting the tiny single letters that make up lines of type that still had some ink in them.
blue metallic coloring occurs in ww alloy when it's been sitting under heat for a long time without being agitated.
and if a spray release or a Teflon pan is used you get little golf ball looking dimples on the surface from the out gassing.
No more info forthcoming....not sure why. I didn't know if this was a common-ish occurrence. Another picture.

Looks like blue wax was dropped on the ingots while still hot, seems some ran down the sides too?

The ladle looks like someone dropped a penny or two into the melt, thats how it turns.
