86,000 Garands Headed to CMP

Do any of our members have a clue as to when the 86,000 Garands will actually be for sale.
(I talked to a clerk at the North Store about 10 days ago & was told that they hadn't seen them yet.)

Because they want the ignorant to pay for their retirements. All the while many of us already have our Garands or other guns know or can find out real quick how much they paid for their litte treasures and are not having any of it. I have heard of a gun guy/ffl in upper Maryland who owns a couple hundred Garands, either whole or barreled receivers, and is sitting on them for the moment he wants to retire.

Two kinds of people in the Garand world of purchasers. Those buying and those selling.
It doesn't bother me one bit why and when a seller wants to liquidate. As a purchaser, I'm only concerned with price. If it's affordable, I'll buy. If not, I pass. Funny how so many folks feel entitled to purchase on their terms. Wonder what they would think if the shoe was on the other foot?

An M1A might be a safer bet . I'm getting old enough to sell many from my collection and listening to the buyers is either frustrating or entertaining . Those who have bought what I had on the table were happy they had good barrels and the parts were not all worn out . Those I couldn't help were they who wanted to pay the low price then gripe about the cost of a new barrel , parts to make the rifle time correctly and someone who knows what to do putting it all together .

This isn't to say getting a good M1A is real easy , but at least with a new one you get some kind of warranty . CMP will help with what is really bad wrong but they do give you an idea of what they have up front .

They must have finally found enough of them to list them on the web, nice! Rumor's have it from people who have toured the CMP warehouses there is still some crates of carbine's that will come to light one day, although I doubt if they will ever be enough to be listed on the web, probably in the stores and auctions. But you never know with the CMP, they keep good secrets of just what they have, I can understand why they would keep it secret.

just take them to a gun auction. last one I was at a 43 springfield with a 48 barrel and a much sanded stock as in it did not even have the right profile any more. went for $1400.

I really like the IHC I got many years ago from the DCM, I sure got my $165 worth at the time. I'd like to pic up a couple for the son and grandson so they each would have one. But when the price of a used M1 exceeds 50% of what a new M1A would cost, it only makes sense to me to go with the new M1A ?? I hope the CMP considers this when pricing this new shipment of M1's, and to add to that, they are in various conditions. $1200 for a new M1A, thinking these M1's to be attractive to me would come in at $600 for the best, and down from there. Fine rifle the M1, I enjoy mine, but I'm not used to throwing money away. I'm looking at this as a shooter, not a collector. Just a opinion.

Why spend $1,200 for an M1A, if you can buy an AR-10 for under a grand? That was the question I asked myself when I decided I wanted a semi-auto 308.

I ended up with an AR-10. Better accuracy, more flexibility, and cheaper mags.

The M1A is still prettier though.

for looks alone its tough to beat wood and steel.
the M1a prices seem to be coming sown also. about this time a few years ago the average M1a popping up on the local market here where 1600$ plus. My friend just bought a new SAI standard for 1150$ shipped. Wood is actually very nice looking. It shoots about as good as a Mia standard and 7.62 nato will with out spending lots of money.
As for the new garands that "might" come in?

I look at it like this will the Acting Secretary of the Army Robert M. Speer take the time to sign off and do what needs to be done to get the M1s cataloged packed up and shipped out to come home? Does he even have the authority to do so. Do we have to what for congress to actually vote in a new Secretary before any of this can go forward?
Im not holding my breath and with a 100$ increase happening with almost every garand "release" by the time we see this batch of 86k a SG mix master will be $1k.... just look at what any and all M1s sell for on cmp auction. Basic service grades have sold for 1500 or more.

my first m1 was a h & r shot the barrel out of it it now wears a .308 barrel and nm sights. I got a Winchester from the old dcm for $225. then I picked up a international harvester. and a springfield. so I have one of each.

When I saw the post about the CMP offering Winchesters, I had to try for one. Sent my order on July 10 and got my rifle today. Beautiful , no pitting visible, CMP stock, SA barrel 11-49, TE 2+, ME 1+, ser. no 102,0xx made March 1941. I need to get off the computer and go load some ammo!

I sent in an order for a WRA to the CMP on 7/12, got a call and email that my page 2a wasn't signed on 7/18. Express mailed another page 2a on 7/19, they should have it in the Monday 7/24 mail. They are still listed on their site, so I'm hoping to get a DBU on Monday. I already have a June '44 SA, 2x 1954 Harrington Richardsons and a 1954 IHC, getting the WRA would complete the set.

Oh so tempting. I'd love to add a Winchester to the Springfield and IH. I have to admit, I'm not crazy about the look of a new CMP stock. Nothing wrong with the stock, they just look and feel better in the old GI wood.
