    86,000 Garands Headed to CMP

    http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2...s-philippines/

The Civilian Marksmanship Program has received confirmation that the Philippine government will be shipping 86,000 M1 Garand rifles back to the United States for distribution to American civilian shooters. Gina Johnson, General Manager of CMP South in Alabama, confirmed the upcoming delivery with the administrators of the M1 Garand Enthusiasts Group Facebook page:
Charles Baker just to clarify…CMP will be receiving the rifles once the Philippines prepares them for shipment. CMP only has to pay the transportation cost of getting these rifles back as they have with every other shipment sent to us. We do not know when these rifles will be shipped back, but they have been approved.
This is one of the largest shipments of M1 Garand rifles back to the US in recent years, and since the CMP only has to pay the cost to ship the rifles back to America (as the guns are already owned by the US government), it’s likely that these will come in at a very affordable cost relative to the wider M1 Garand market. In other words, this is your big chance to pick up one of General George S. Patton’s “most deadly rifle in the world” for yourself!

If you are interested in buying one of these CMP M1 Garands when they hit the CMP store and haven’t gone through the process of CMP approval before, be sure to check out my two-part article on how to qualify and get your very own M1 rifle. It’s a very special feeling to have a rifle shipped directly to your door, courtesy of the US government (via the CMP), and I highly recommend to everyone that can to try it at least once!

I remember qualifying back in the day. It was so long ago I can't remember how old I was though. I think I was still in my twenties.

The reason I remember it so well was because the qualifying was done on a mid-summer weekend. On that particular summer weekend, the temperatures reached into the 120 degree mark here in the Arizona desert. With very little shade and only soda and sparse water supplied by the organizers, it was really, really hot; dangerously hot.

I remember qualifying but I never did get a rifle because the day after that I was laid up for nearly a year due to complications from exposure to that amount of heat. I'm not blaming anyone but myself for not drinking more water and trying harder to stay cool but, damn; I missed out big time. Maybe this incoming batch of M1's can serve as my redemption.

I remember it was a very hot day when I qualified as well. I did it about 7 years ago at Rio Salado.

If you're referring to the shooting range over on Usery-Pass, that's exactly where we were at when I qualified. At the time, they hadn't yet built the shade-awnings and shooting benches they have now. We were out in the open with only make-shift tarps put up to keep the ammo from overheating.

Great news for those wanting to buy one, may well depress the sellers market for a while.

When we get to the 19 dollar Carbines I will be there.

Don't hold your breath on the cost. CMP does not sell rifles "cheap". The old DCM sold rifles far less than market value ($20.00 for 1911's and $90.00 for M1 Garands) but you will never see CMP selling them below market value. CMP is a civilian outfit and operates as such. Not bad mouthing them, just stating the facts. I have bought off them and was treated very well. I will be very happy to see M1 Garands coming back home and hope M1 Carbines will follow. james

Sure am. Same place. Couldn't imagine doing it without shade though. That would be truly brutal. You definitely earned yours.

No house is a home without a good Garand! I bought mine 15 years ago for $450.00 and it is minty. Springfield receiver that was rebuilt at Red River Arsenal in 1965. It is not one that is returned from a foreign country.

Hoping these will result in $595.00 Service Grade Garands.

If the Korean Garands and Carbines come back, we could even see sub-$1,000 Carbines.

CMP will not drop their current prices simply because they are going to get a restocking of rifles from the Phillipines.
The big issue will be how many "hoarder-collectors" will converge like vultures on Anniston and Perry, the very first day the rifles are available for purchase.
Me...I just need a decent receiver and I'll build my own!

These rifles have been used and then stored for many years a lot is going to depend on the care and how they were stored. When Korea started a lot of the garands stored after ww2 were surveyed out and unfit and sent for rebuild due to poor matenince and storage.

How many of these rifles will even meet service grade criteria is what I'd like to know. Guess we'll have to wait and see. I bought a CMP "Rack Grade" back in the first days of the Greek returns for $295, and it's my best shooter by far. Metal was almost perfect, but the stock looked like it was run over by a tank. I replaced it with a SA USGI set that I already had. I bought several grades of the "Greeks" including Collector, Correct, and service and rack. The grading has changed drastically since I first bought my M1's, and I have to say that I would not buy a rack grade ever again from the CMP. At a minimum, pay the $$$ for service grade or above now. I'm sure the Korean and Philippine imports will be a carp shoot. Luck of the draw I suppose. Good luck.
