    58 barrel

Having a renegade barrel made into a .58 round ball barrel.
What size mould works the best?

Depends on the depth of the rifling. With shallow grooves, I like a thin patch and a larger diameter (.575) ball. Since yours will be a custom barrel, I'd start with a .570 ball and a thick patch, though. In the end, the rifle will tell you what it likes.

Does the barrel maker have any suggestions?

Ask him. I've heard great things about his work and I'm sure he'll tell you what you need to know.

Didn't know Bob Hoyt was doing your work. Most assuredly speak to him. His advice is spot on.

Depending on the groove depth and twist Bobby makes a great Minie ball barrel.

First shot >.575 ball with a 0.010 patch is very accurate >with a clean barrel.
After your first shot your barrel is fouled. So for ease of reloading .570 ball with a 0.015 patch is suggested.
After the third shot of a .570 patched ball you can expect to swab your barrel >so to remove most any of today's guaranteed powders fouling.

My 58 cal rifle is a T/C Big Bore. This (above) written is what I shoot.

I had Bob do a 58 for me, from a rotted out TC 54. Ends up it shoots best with a .562" ball and denim patches. I tried .570" and .575" with thinner patches and while it was OK, the smaller ball and thick patch shoots the best. Gives you an excuse to experiment a bit and shoot more, finding out what works in your rifle.

A.010 patch will be no where thick enough for that .011 depth rifling hoyt uses.

I don't know, but have thought I would like to have the one I bought from you bored to 58 with a round ball twist. I am just not sure how well it will work with that short barrel.
