I just saw, but cannot confirm, that James Gates has passed. I admired him greatly. He was a true shotgun innovator. Hopefully, RMc can provide verification. Dixie Slugs = awesome.

Sorry to hear that. James was a frequent poster on this and at least one other site I know of. he was very helpful and shared information freely with reloaders. He will be missed.
I searched last night and I couldn't find confirmation of his passing.

Excellent, excellent article. Thank you Mr. Gates! What I eventually came to developing the "perfect" buckshot load incorporates everything he posits in creating a good buckshot load. He recommends the slow bulky powder and I found that Alliant Steel (even bulkier and slower burning than BlueDot) produced greater velocity at lower pressure. Hard shot is a must and my best loads came from a very high antimony lead (7.5%) I got from a vemdor here. Ditto the straight wall hull (new federal from BPI.) More shot does not equal more pellets on target. Not all barrels are not created equal. Develop the load that works best from your gun and until you prove it on paper it's just a guess. My "perfect" load for my 870 with screw-in full choke and 2 3/4" hulls was poor from my son's Browning semi-auto with a 3 1/2" chamber. It's said that a wise man learns from his mistakes; the wisest man learns from others' mistakes. I definitely ain't the wisest!
