My Big Medicine rifle came in today. It's unfired but that probably won't last forever. I have always wanted a .405 and did not have a stainless/laminate version of the number one. If anyone uses the .405, post up some pics or stories!

Classic Big Bore and the platform is second to none. Should be allot of fun. Made for boolits.
It's a great cartridge. I have a Winchester 95 in 405.

The .405 is a great old cartridge, and very similar to the old .40-70 Sharps Straight in case dimensions. A little shorter, and a smaller bullet diameter. In a Ruger #1 it can be hot-rodded pretty good!
Case capacity gets in the way for going much over factory ballistics.
Using Hogdons youth data with 4895 , or 5744 seems to be about as good as it gets with cast bullets. Powders slower than 4895 work well with jacketed bullets. Can't get it any more but RX 12 is a great powder for the 405, and a lot of the old guys really liked 4320.

Not lucky enough to afford at this time any #1, orig.1895, or even a WinBaroku "95 or "86.I've been making do for a 405 W.with an Encore..Haven't yet been tempted to "Hotrod" ,as even the current Hornady factory jacketed stuff was not "fun" under current conditions...!!! Onceabull

I have always wanted a 405 myself. Someday.
I'm not a fan of hotrodding any caliber, as my old body doesn't like the recoil. But the #1 is plenty strong for those who do!
I just added a #1 to my collection again. I've had them previously in .458 Win Mag, .45-70, and .375 in the past. Hated the .458 Tropical and sold it quickly. The .45-70 Lyman Centennial was a nice gun and caliber, as was the .375! The one I just traded into is an early red pad 7x57 Mauser, and I haven't fired it yet. I love the 7x57, so have high hopes it might shoot well with cast bullets. If it wont shoot cast, it will likely go away.
while i was researching a caliber(s) that MGM barrels could do on my encore, a 405 win was right in there. but i chose the 444 marlin instead. now don't get me wrong, i like my 444, but i do luv a cartridge's history. 50-70 gov and 38-55 win are just a couple of cartridges i luv. the 405 win is another, i just couldn't get the brass at the time. i've always wanted to shoot a 300gr lfn gc or even a 350gr lfn gc.
I've had original Win 95s in .405. Never had a good one. Kept selling them off hoping to come
across one in reasonable shape that hadn't been Bubbaed! A while back I bought a gently used
remake of the 95. I shot a couple boxes through it and traded it off. Seemed to shot ok but I
couldnt warm up to repro. Still got my dies and bullet mold waiting for a good 95 to come along.
Never had a Ruger #1 in 405, but have had them and #3s ( still have a few) in other cals from
22 Hornet to 458mg and found them all to be exceptional shooters.
I have the .405 in a win 85 Highwall It is an excellent cal. My rifle does well with the Accurate molds 335 gr and 5744

What boolit are you shooting in the picture?
My #41-280A.
The nose taper at .413" diameter at .51" length, to .405" diameter at .635" length, engraves the rifling leade perfectly in my chamber. Extracted cartridges have rifling marks on that portion of the bullet.

I had a #1 in .405 built before they were available as factory rifles and before I started casting. I wish I'd never have traded it, I made a handsome profit on the trade but I still shouldn't have let it leave my hands...
Much like the .45-70 you can load from popgun to heavy big game loads. With the .405 and 400gr Woodleigh bullets you can duplicate the old 450/400 NE loads that were used for elephant. At only 2,150fps I now know that is easy boolit territory.
