    Rem 581 to .17?

I'm wondering if a Rem 581 can be rebarreled to become a .17 HMR single shot.
I know of 510 Remingtons that are rechambered to .22 mag and work fine.
Was this the same action used for the 5mm RM- I've heard yes and no.
i'm sure I've asked this before but indulge me please.
    Best, Thomas.

...........The 580 series was the same action for the 5mmRF, other then a modification made for the extractor on the 5mm. The 591/592's (or the 580 series) can be modified into a centerfire. Some info here: http://www.5mmforums.com/articles/5mmcraig.html.

Thank you Buckshot. I love my 581 and I love the .17 for crows & such so I'm daydreaming.

Wasn't the 5mm rem mag model 591 on a slightly longer action? Or at least had a longer ejection port? Not sure you could eject a loaded round if you built it on a 581.

Thanks Nobade- I'll check that out. For those that suggest getting a Savage or Marlin- save your breath. I like my mini 788. There's two heavy barrel thumbhole Savage .17s in the safe. Their mags are as iffy as the 581.

I looked at my rifle and a fired .17 HMR case and by golly I believe the only mod needed will be to shorten the ejector(and install the barrel of course). And build a feed tray and blind floor plate. Back burner project!

Good deal! That is great to know. Those 581s are so much nicer than anything being made now.

That is a rather broad statement unless you are referring specifically to Remington's offerings. While the 580 series of 22s are fine little rifles, I will put the CZ 450 (452, 453, 455) series against it at any point of consideration, with the possible exception of price, and come out on top.

Point conceded. I wasn't thinking about those.
