    I did it !!

I'm 6 weeks shy of 70 years old and its getting harder to backpack, but this week I took off, loaded up a light 25 lb. pack and snow shoe'd in to my cabin up in the North Central Cascades. The cabin is 3 miles in from the point were I had to leave my truck. Its up hill all the way and the snow was 3ft deep; it took 2-1/2 hours to hike in. It was a great hike, through beautiful still woods. Some deer and coyote and rabbit tracks could be seen. The cabin was in excellent condition and it only took a short time to get a fire burning and to warm the place up.
My hiking days are numbered, I know but I don't feel like quitting yet. t

I sure can see why you would want to go there.

Good for you ATR! Love the cascades up there, they have been calling me lately. Nice little cabin too!

Good job! I've been itching to get in the mountains this spring. Got 3 trips planned for this summer, and started building snowshoes for next winter. Have never snowshoed but sounds like an awesome experience.

I use snow shoes from REI. They are made in America, black , rather costly by well worth the price.

and yes the cabin is isolated. No power, no roads, no immediate neighbors. The cabin is 16x26 with an 8x8 "mud room off the front. Its a work in progress !

I have done a little snowshoeing, and you can get quite a workout. Nothing like 3 miles, just the path around my 4 acre parcel. Just keep it up, atr! remember, if you don't use it, you lose it!

Congratulations there young man. Looks like the snow was hard packed but walking in snowshoes up an incline for 3 miles through Nature is a real pleasure but somewhat of a pain for the next day or two.

Congrat's, I love that kind of weather and country. I wish I had a place like that to hike to. The peace and quiet you experience in those isolated places. I am jealous man, and I too hope I can do that at 70.

I have to thank my ancestors for good genes.....hard headed northern European stubbornish with a dash of Irish stubbornish thrown in.
The stillness of the mountains surrounding the cabin area amazes me every time I am there. My property is located way inside the Okanogan National Forest. It is a private piece of property that never got bought out by the state or the federal government. No power or electricity which suits me just fine. The access road in is not passable during the winter,,,hence I have to hike in. The cabin itself is a comfortable 16'x26' with a 8'x8' extension on the south side. It is totally insulated and this year I plan to put the siding and trim on.

I love to backpack. Do to work (aka owning my own business) I only get to do local day hikes of about 6 miles about 2 times a week. I wish I could get away to a place like yours. Have fun.

    Hi John,
I too own my own business and I have to fit my outdoor time between jobs. It is doable but not as consistent as I would like.

last year when I hiked in there was 4 to 5 ft of snow
this year I went earlier and it was easier because there was only about 1 ft of snow
