My first inquiry into handloading as a kid...wondering what made those things go bang?

Opening the first one with my trusty pocket knife was a little like dissecting a live Rattle Snake...didn't know what to expect or what I'd find...only that if something goes wrong, well...it ain't gonna be pretty!
