Exclamation Anyone use Boric Acid? ETA: for oxidation protection

Just picked up a Lyman cast Manual #3 (and what I believe is #2).

I always like to read through new manuals cover to cover, mostly for entertainment, but also to keep myself sharp, and you never know what you'll learn!

Anyway, the manual suggested using boric acid on the top of the lead to create a vapor/oxidation barrier.

I've heard of people using sawdust ontop of the pot before, and I honestly son use anything.

I was just wondering if this is a very old school method, and if anyone still practices it?

The Lyman 3 actually says to use it strictly as an anti-oxidation barrier, and says NOT to mix it into the lead.

I wasn't looking for it as a Flux, so much as an anti-oxidation barrier.

My mistake for not being clear. Good read though.

It has also been reported to be good for killing termites. I've never verified this as I don't have a termite problem.

Termites, cockroaches, and yellow jackets (ground bees). Sold in quart sized containers as "Roach Prufe"

Same stuff is used, mixed with syrup to poison ants. They carry it back to the nest where it kills the queen and the brood.
It's the only effective ant poison that I've found.
I tried some of that marvelcrap ONCE. I've still got 2 3/4 jars of it after 10-12 years.

My great uncle recommended it as an ant and roach killer as well, mixed with peanut butter as a bait.
