I just got a 94 Winchester made in '65 or so. I had some 311041's from my last 30-30 endeavor with a Mossberg. Loaded some up with 25 to 26.5 g of H4895 and had about an 1" group at fifty yards with iron sights. Now my question is what all around boolit for the Winchester? Lyman 311041, 165g RD old design NOE, 165g RD new design or another? I think this gun hasn't been shot much and anything will work well, but looking for input from other Winchester owners. Thanks in advance.
Have used the Lee C309-170F for over 30 years. I use 50/50 old wheel weights and new linotype metal alloy, Hornady gas checks and NRA Alox formula lube. Shoots very well in all of the Winchester .30-30's I've tried. Have taken at least a dozen Colorado mule deer with it.
Also shoots very well in .30-06, .308, .300 Savage, .30-40 Krag and just about everything I've tried it in.
Cast the Lee 150 gr flat nose for a mate of mine ,ramshot list tac for jacketed and lead boolits,works for him.
I like the Lee molds for the 30-30. Killed deer with a mold designed for the 303 that was sized down to 309 and then I flattened its nose with the sizing punch while sizing. Weighed 188 grains with my alloy, and dropped nice deer at 140 paces from my tree. Less hassle now using the Lee 170 grain mold and have plinked a lot with the 150's. To be honest, the Winchester 94 is pretty forgiving with most cast bullets. I never had near the problems getting any cast to shoot out of them like I had some of the old military rifles.

The 311041 is a good bullet, and will serve you well. If you already have the mold you're set, the Lee 170 is great also.
311041.....as izzyjoe says; "If you already have the mold you're set".....if not then I suggest getting one. The Lyman 311041 is the standard for the 30-30 all other designs attempt to emulate.

Bought 1K winchester 170 gr. 30-30 silver tips and the same amount and weight for my 32 Special just before Lock Stock & Barrels closing at a price I couldn't turn down. Haven't got around to shooting any out of my 94s or my model 36 S-C Marlin yet.
Seems to me my 31141 Ideal mold and modern clones of do get the job done on snow shoe hare to deer. Occasionally in my hunting forest too..
AA2230 under a g/c and from a Tip given by Nobade> WC-860 under the P/P are my preferenced powders for the 30-wcf & 32 special. Have tried many powders over the years and some even promoted here on this Cast Boolits site in both cartridges but to date have not found better than those two powders I use.
I had a 311041 but sold it when I sold my Mosberg 464. I had about 500 made up and just held onto them. My 06 likes them too. Thanks for all the input everyone. I've been looking for one of those Forster trimmers to start hollow pointing with once I decide on a mold.
Well if you are going to buy a mold, try the Lee 170. I've used it in several 30-30's and a few other 30's.
I have a Forster trimmer and hollow pointers. Totally unimpressed with them. Use the right alloy and you don't need HP's. I found that cast bullets worked just fine out of a 30-30.

31-182C from accurate. Drops 185 with COWW, shoots fine from my marlin and BO pistol at pretty much max loads. PC or BLL. No crimp groove, so seat where ever you want. No setback in the tube or mag. Disregard the poor group, I'm very recoil sensitive. BO with R.D. wasn't too bad, The SA marked ones I had to step back aim & shoot, no cheek weld. H.G. just sitting on a front stand. Scoped results @ 50 are about the same.

I got the mihec 308 hp mould.
Seems to shoot good and blow stuff up.
PP'd acww with 29 grains 2206h (varget) 2000ish fps does a job on rogue 1 ltre coke bottles.
Be awesome on wallabies or roo's...or cats

Tried several various molds from many companies keep going back to the lee mentioned above, with my house alloy it falls heavy and after pc and gc it runs about 180 and shoots well in just about everything I've tried it in!
Another popular mold similar to the Lee 185 mold is the RCBS 180FN. Probably less monkeying around. With cast I prefer the heavier bullets. Used a 200 grain bullet that weighed out at 208 grains in my old 303 British which also impressed me. Big factor in my purchase of a 35 Remington.

I agree. It's the only mold I have for my 30-30's, which have all been Winchesters or Marlins. It's the first mold I bought when I was starting off, years ago, and I've not seen a need to spend any more on another mold for my 30-30's.
I too use the Lee 170 grain. 50/50 alloy and Hornady gas check. Soft lube. I use 5744 and find it to be a very effective accurate combination.

For my 4 30-30's I use a Lee 311-150. Easy on lead and shoots well
