    Need help starting 200 grain .357 @ 1000 fps

    Greetings,

I just joined this forum because I am positive you all can help.

I need to to figure out where to start. Data for this problem is scarce.

    What I want:

My 200 grain TC boolits (old stock from National Bullet Company). They are .862" long.

Loaded long-ish to COAL 1.650, to get closer to the lands but still run reliably in the magazine.

Reasonable accuracy to shoot gray diggers, nutria and the like.

The gun is a Ruger 77/357 rifle with a 11.5" barrel 1:16" twist. I also have a suppressor for it, so the stability is paramount (yes they are legally possessed).

According to this site it should stabilize:

    http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmstab-5.1.cgi

Powders I have include 2400, Bullseye, Unique and Trailboss.

Anybody want to venture a range with these powders? I'm not opposed to buying more, I just have lots of the above.

    Many thanks in advance!

10.0gr. 2400 is a good place to start. Our local guys use that load under 200gr. bullets in their 357 rifles for big bore cowboy silhouette, it's got a loopy trajectory but hits hard at 200M. Should mess up a squirrel pretty good.

You might want to look into powder coating your bullets for use through a suppressor so you don't fill it with bullet lube.

To get the most of those bullets they will likely need to be seated out longer than magazine length and used as a single shot. Bet it's more accurate that way.

My 195 gr boolits give 1250 fps with11.5 gr of 2400 in my trapper .work up from 10 gr to find what that rifle likes.

9.2/H4227 IN 38 Special cases =1075 with a 200 gr cast / 24" barrel with very good accuracy @ 100.you could back that off 5 to 10% with 2400 for about the same velocity..

Start at 4.5 gr of Unique and work up in .2 gr increments until you hear a "snap" just in front of the suppressor. The "snap" is the beginning of the air moving around the bullet compressing and creating the "sonic crack". With the shape of that bullet it may begin to snap before 1000 fps. When you here the "snap" back off .4 gr which will give you a cushion for any atmospheric changes.
