I think it's a little high, but with the mum being there, nice wood and metal it might be in the ball park. They are collectable, and there certainly aren't any more being made. I'd try to talk them down with an offer of $325. They might go for it or settle somewhere in the middle.

My first experience with a "Type 39" was for less than $75 from a pawn shop with mum intact and it shot 10 shots cold into a 2" group at 100 yards. After tweaking up from 100's to 140-'s.

That's a bit high, but not too far off depending on condition . As most of you know in the past 10 years prices have jumped a lot and the jap guns more than the others. If it's in good condition do your best to knock the price done a day done leave without it lol. The prices are only going up

Can't hurt to see if he would take a little less. I have one that my grandfather brought home from WWII. When I inherited it, it was full of sand. The stock was pretty beat but the metal in good condition and still has the dust cover. Once I got it cleaned up, it's a surprisingly good shooter. I might even be tempted at that price, but would see if he takes a little less.

I'd dicker to the best of your ability and make sure I ended up walking out of the store with it, regardless.

    What is the intended use?
    What is the bore condition?
The "correct" price or the price one is willing to pay varies with that.

I like Arisakas. Brute strong action and quite often quite accurate. I've had the 38 & the 99. In the condition you describe I would get it, shoot it, clean it. And hang it up waiting for a collector.

I've looked for a good Type 38 for years. I've found many that were outwardly in very good shape, but almost invariably, the bores are toast. If you plan to shoot it and expect good accuracy, take a cleaning rod with you and see what the bore looks like after a cleaning. If the bore's good, I'd certainly pay the tariff.

Type 99s with their (other than late war) chromed bores usually are very shootable even if the exterior is beat up.

Let us know what you decide and then post a few photos if you do buy it.
    Keep your powder dry,
