Also you can store you rounds nose up for years and coating them keeps the lead exposure down so they are almost child safe. But I just like being different.

Shoot both in long and short guns. Both work fine. PC rules on indoor ranges as no smoke. PC is an issue with bore riding rifle boolits. PCs are also sooooo pretty !

Please explain the trouble with bore riding boolits? Not being snarky or picking an argument, I've just seen that statement twice and wonder about it.

In a torpedo-nosed boolit (in my case, an example would be the 311291), you don't need an extra couple of thousandths on the nose if it already fits the lands upon chambering. I use a nose sizing die on those, but it does add an extra step in the process that isn't needed in just regular lubing.

If I use a powder coated 311299 it will not work in my garand. The extra minuscule amount the powder adds to the bore riding section is enough to make it jamb and not chamber fully.

I like lubed and powder coated boolits equally. Some of the pc perks are,
    No smoke
    No dirty reside
No worry about lube contamination during storage
    Zero leading.

If you load large quantities on a progressive, PC is the ticket. Keeps all the dies clean and they work great in at least 2 bullet feeders that I use (Hornady and RCBS). Probably work in them all, but I can only vouch for those 2. I still have a 450 with all my dies stored away, "just in case", but I suspect I'll never pull it out again...or I'll sell it. Probably need to sell it more sooner than later, before there's no one left who would use it

Yeah, I Hi-Tek my 30-30s for that reason. Then my pistol and rifle boolits are split about half and half between lube and PC, depending on the weather. (I do my spraying and baking outside, but I can lube during even the worst of it!) Mama loves the PC, so I coat all of hers that I load.

If you are shooting a big bore AR with cast, PC type coating the cast bullet is just the way to go. I get 2500 and 2400 fps with my 358 bullets. in my two 358 ARs, with no leading, no fouling. And I do not spend a pile on jacketed bullets or need to clean out the gas system.

I mostly PC except for the same issue with bore riders... hope some PC moulds arrive and fix that situation...

I do some LLA - simply because I have a lot of that stuff

    Is Hi-Tek thinner coating?

Never got into it, but would look at it if thats the case - seemed like a lot more work than PC.

Hi-Tek is thinner. Think of it more as a stain than as a coating. It's not a lot of work, but you do have to shake and bake twice. But it's just shake, pour and bake. 'Works good on my 30-30s.

When I first saw this forum I was like a lot of other guys and thought "why go through all that hassle" Then shake and bake came along. I already had some air soft BB's (My boy's) and an old toaster over. All I needed was some non-stick aluminum foil and some paint. I bought a pound of Harbor Freight Red (about $5 with coupon). The rest as they say is history !!!!

The day I took all my die sets apart and cleaned all of the impacted lube out of them I vowed to NEVER lube again.

The funny thing is I have probably PC'd a few thousand bullets and I think I may have used half of that first pound of powder !!!

I'm still wondering what I'm going to do with all this lube............

My suggestion to the OP is to try some. Even if you need to barrow them from someone. Clean your seat and crimp dies before you load them. Then go out with a clean pistol or rifle and shoot them. Notice the absence of smelly lube smoke. Then after you are finished look at all your equipment including your hands. That's when it will hit you

NOE nose sizers work great to allow the bore riders to work perfectly, and he offers them in enough different sizes to size them perfectly for your rifle.

    Why PC?
Well, do you want to avoid the carbon sludge that results from wax lube? (i.e. a cleaner gun after shooting)
Do you want to lessen the smoke?
Do you want to be able to shoot slightly softer lead?
Do you want to lube faster (maybe not if you own a Star)?

I have to say that I would prefer PC bullets over other lube even if I did not "need" the PC, but in my case I do need it. I have three centerfire suppressors and had found it necessary to switch from cast bullets to plated to avoid gumming up the works and having the centerfire cans look like the rimfire can inside. Also, one rounds I cast for is the 300 BLK which is fired in an AR, as noted by RogerDat. Learning about powder coating has saved me a bunch of money for that reason.

Also, I do not understand the issue of investment to try PC. A pound of powder and a $10 toaster oven from Goodwill is all it takes to get into it. Or go first class and buy a new oven from Wal Mart for $30. Still not a major investment. The PC gun is a luxury, not a necessity. I have one and seldom use it.

The 2 posts before bring up more good points. I cast for several hand gun calibers and a couple rifle calibers. Where I used lube I had to adjust my alloy hardness for certain calibers or even certain guns.

I now cast 12Bhn for everything and have no issues. No trace lead fouling no lead spray in the muzzle brake of my 500 S&W. Could these things be fixed altering your alloy and using gas checks, sure they could. You still would have the trace lead fouling though.

Even in Glock polygonal barrels my 12Bhn PC boolits shoot as clean as j-word.

    I'm shooting a 440gr .501" at 12bhn using 27.5gr Iil gun without gas checks in the 500.

I'm shooting a gas checked Lee 160gr 2R TL at 12bhn close to 2000fps. I eventually intend to try them without the gas check.

The PC simply gives you well simplicity.

No need to switch as PC is just another tool in the kit. Use what is appropriate for the requirement. I do TL with no sizing, TL with sizing, pa(i)n lubing, Star with lube and also PC with & without lube. It's like a box of assorted chocolates.
