45-75 Loading Data (Smokeless)

Hi Guys.

i have the Uberti 1876 repro in .45-75 calibre. Loading black powder rounds is straight forward; but smokeless data is another story! The only data I can find is on the net.

I want to shoot exclusively mild loads that duplicate the historic ballistics of the original rifle. Can I safely use Trapdoor level .45-70 data to approximate it? I would dearly love to burn 3031 and 4895 in this gun when running smokeless if possible.

Any recommendations/experiences sincerely appreciated.

The last Lyman reloading book (49?) Not the current book had an article about loading for the 1876 and had data in it. If I remember I will have a look for it tomorrow.

What does the manufacturer say about this? That would seem like the best place to start. Ask what pressure it's rated to. Free internet advice isn't always the best advice when it comes to personal safety.

Lyman Cast bullet handbook has 2 pages of 1873 Trapdoor loads covering 10 boolits of different weights with 8 different powders for each boolit weight. It has a start and max load for each boolit weight. 3031 and 4895 loading data is displayed for many of the boolit/powder combinations.

This is the "Gold Standard" for published cast boolit data.

28.0 grs AA 5744, 350 gr cast FP bullet seated to 2.20 OAL. will give 1300 FPS and shoot to the sights. Enjoy. JimP.

If this site is correct http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.c...8#.WLpudIWcFaQ the 45-75 has a water capacity of 73.8 while the 45-70 is 75.5. The Trapdoor loads should be safe, but, that is solely based on case capacity. If you read that claims that Uberti claims 29,000 psi is safe for the 76. All of the Lyman trapdoor loads are going to be safe since Lyman limits there TD loads to 18,000 psi or under. Others go up to SAAMI spec. 28,000 psi

350 gr bullet over 75 gr FF.

Old recommended smokeless was 22 gr SR4759 under a 350 gr bullet and 24 gr under a 300 gr bullet.

Yep, The Lyman 49th has an excellent article by Brian Pearce about the 1876 replicas . 20 loads in all for the 45-75. I f You don't have the Lyman, every re- loader would benefit from all the excellent information. Good Luck.

45/75 data in lyman edition 49 says to use cast bullets sized to.458. these would not fit. i went to .454 and they fit perfectly

Fit perfectly? You best slug your bore. .454 is 45 Colt range. Too small for 45/75. How do you mean fit perfectly? Chamber wise. Possibly you bulged the brass a bit when seating the bullet? I use .459 for my 45/75 with no chambering problems ant get great accuracy.
