    Lucky Find

I was going through all of the 'stuff' that has accumulated on top of my safes and came across a stack of empty boxes. Some of them seemed a bit heavy.

Eight boxes of new 30-378 Weatherby brass.

Anyone ever try cast in a 30-378?

Just googled this cartridge. First to get 10 of 10 in the 10X at 1,000 yds. Slow dense powders got it to over 6,000 fps. I bet those barrels didn't last long. Designed to pierce armor with speed.

Supposedly the 30-378 was Weatherby's answer to a government request for the ultimate sniper rifle.

.308, 30-06, 375H-H, and 30-378 Weatherby. 106grains of powder behind a 165gr Barnes X bullet. Works extremely well on mule deer.

It would probably work pretty well on a rhino too. Looks like one hard hitting round.

Weatherby website has a 165gr ballistic tip at 3500fps muzzle velocity (4488ft-lb). Wikipedia claims the 6000fps mark was achieved back in 1959 during testing for the army.

I read it on the internet, it has to be true.

A friend of mine owns a game preserve for pheasants, etc. He and his boys hunt caribou every year way up in Hudson Bay country. One of his boys bought a 30/378 Weatherby and practiced with it out to 750 yards (length of the preserve) using Barnes and Nosler bullets. He settled on Barnes for his load at 165 grains. That Fall he was dropping caribou with 1 shot instantly at a stepped off 600 yds. He had to be careful that there weren`t 2 animals in a row when he fired. Of course there was an exit hole half the size of Rhode Island on the exit side.Robert

Mozeppa, is that an electromagnetic rail gun?
