Doing a bit of research I found an instance where someone had issues feeding 458 socom from .308 style AICS mags. He referenced when cycling the bolt the rounds would nose dive into the mag, which was my initial concern when looking at a 458 round sitting in a 308 AICS mag.

    my thoughts

1 - try out a stock 308 BDL / follower and drop the idea of a mag fed rifle. I put the action in my houge stock and tried feeding. it obviously will not chamber but the rounds pick up / yet not an indication of full function. still concerned about the extra space up front, even using longer rounds.

2 - replace the follower and mag spacer with a .223 version? Is there a significant difference between these parts and the .308 version?

3 - magpul detachable mag well and use AICS mags in 5.56? I have an AICS chassis i can pull off my other 700 and check.....

4 - PTG bottom metal that takes ar mags. The only problem is they only accept metal mags (no big deal) but requires some modification to the bottom of the receiver and inletting of the stock. (it doesn't look as clean as standard bottom metal

5 - Am i still crazy for thinking about doing this?

saw this the other day, the rounds are much farther forward.

I don't know about that but if it looks like it might work I wouldn't worry about trying to "fix" anything.

Install a 458 socom barrel and see, if it turns out to be a problem then pick up where you left off.

ordered the barrel yesterday. Took a look at a 700 at gander mountain (after waiting for 20 minutes standing there) yesterday to look at the difference with the internal mag. I plan on ordering the .223 follower, spring, spacer and block. I think it will feed better using those parts, instead of the 308 follower, because it will be similar to the dimensions it was designed for with Ar mags.

What barrel did you get and where did you order it from?
