I have a '71 that was built after WWI, when the Germans were prohibited from manufacturing military rifles. They tastefully replaced the barrel with a long .410 tube and made a nice little single shot shotgun instead. My mother bought it in a small Oregon gunshop back in the 60's for the princely sum of $20 and used it to dispatch many a pest in her garden. When she passed on, I inherited the gun and found it to be an excellent little scattergun.

My gunsmith has tried to pry it away from me several times for the action, but no......it was Mom's gun.

FYI is a crude, but effective front sight I made for my 1871; I am now able to keep in the black on an MR31 at 100 yards with a load of 35 gr. of 3031 under a 370 gr bullet. It was made from scrap 3/4" ID soldered copper tubing. The folded copper post is wide enough to see with my 70 year old eyes (How did we get so old, Dutch?). The height is .455 above the top of the barrel; the tension fit does not shift during firing. Yeah, it's ugly, but it works. It's going to be blackened.
