Chassepot success

Chassepot paper cartridge. Musket cap and toy cap as primer.
Loaded by weighing the charge this time.
80gr "F" through a 36" drop tube.
Used a Wonder wad over the powder to take up some space.
Shot this at 100yds off the bench.

Very cool! Had a chance at one not too long ago, but couldn't pull the trigger (pun intended). Seeing this....I might not let the next one get by me!

Making the cartridge is not that bad.
Tying the string is the hardest part for me.

Good Afternoon. That is outstanding success with the Chassepot!

I am not sure how you made your cartridges but I would like to offer my technique for making them and how I have gotten away from the little toy caps. Please see the "Black Powder" section at Milsurps.com and search by Chassepot cartridges. I use an internal support system that allows me to use a very thin paper casing, no toy cap, and 100% first-pull ignition. Residue is reduced and it is inexpensive and not too complicated. Randy

What happens to the tube?????
I've had great success with the toy caps.
Tiny bit of 4F in the cap.
Case is thin brown wrapping paper. Round punch out for the rear.
Felt wad under the boolet to take up space.
Playing with different size of black powder.
1F works the best so far.
2F is second. But needs COW filler.
Cannon didn't work to well.
Just got some 1 1/2F.
I'll give it a try when I have time.

Pop & I still need to get back to ours. We got as far as reliable ignition and then other projects pushed it aside. He improvised a scoop out of a .22 gas check soldered to some copper wire for a handle, and uses that for measuring out black powder to put inside the musket caps. We found that made all the difference in the world for getting instant ignition of our Triple 7 main charge, and haven't needed the toy caps.

Now that's interesting. Musket caps aren't small, as long as they are pointing at the main charge, but it sounds like the extremely momentary nature of their ignition isn't good at going around corners.
