    296 powder?

Why does the win 296 powder container say rifle on it? Reload manual doesn't show a load with it till the 357 mag page

Interesting, since the Winchester site shows.
This propellant was developed for Winchester factory-loaded ammunition for 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, and 410 Bore. Its high loading density provides optimal velocity. 296 is recommended by Winchester for 410 Bore AA loads.

The container I'm looking at says handgun, but it may not be the latest packaging. A picture would be great. I will say 296 is my favorite fuel For full tilt 44 mag. It also can be used in small rifles like 22 hornet and 410 shotguns.

I've got an eight pounder here that says handgun and 410 bore shotgun. Most reloading manuals have it listed for 22hornet and 17hornet.

My favorite for .300 Blackout, 357 Mag, .41 Mag, and probably .30 carbine whenever I get around to loading for it. It and it's twin H110 will always have a place in my loading room. I consider the little .30 cals rifles!

I use it to great effect in .22 Hornet...11grs behind a 40gr bullet...lights out load in my Contender.

It was originally developed as the powder for the 30 Carbine.
Cast is an adjective, a noun and a verb. Cast works as both imperative and past tense without any additional letters or helping verbs.

I've been tempted to try 296 with a cast 170 grain bullet in my 30-30. I haven't because 296 isn't known to be reduced load friendly...

it works fair in the 30-06.
if it had more load density it would do pretty darn good.

Probably because of the 30 carbine.

    I've used W296/H110 for 357, 44 mag, Ruger only 45Colt, 300 BO and now 500 S&W. Those 500 S&W loads sting a bit with full boogie 440gr loads in a 15" barrel...

And by the way, my powder of choice for 357 & 44 magnum loads.

2400 used to be marked as a rifle powder too.
it got it's name from being the powder used to get 2400 fps from the 22 hornet.

I use H110 (fraternal twin of 296) in 300BLK with great consistency in supersonic loads. Low muzzle pressure at the end of the barrel makes it a (relatively) quiet load as well.

For subs and cast boolits, not particularly great.
