296 powder?

The 296/H-110 duo make a great 357 Rifle load especially with a 200 gr or 180 gr RCBS seated to clear a revolver cylinder and hard crimped over the ojive or rotating band so they will full function in a 94 Win or Marlin. Plus they work real well with a 357 Super Mag or 445 Super Mag and rifle primers.

Guess it would depend on the book for data, Lee manual shows H110, right next to 296 with exact same data, but only for some bullet weights. So if you can find 110 data you can just use 296. I had been using H110, but couldn't find any so bought 296. I only use it when I have the barrel to burn it. Loads that work great in my Rossi rifle in 45 colt, are just to brutal to use in a pistol. I shift to something faster burning when I have less barrel.

if it had more load density it would do pretty darn good.

I usta use 17 gr H110 with a 110 gr boolit for gophers way back when. Shoulda kept that Springfield...

Did some test loads with the first LB I bought the loads were accurate and functioned great. I got a great deal on a 8lb so it looks like my go to powder for the 300 BO at least for now.

It's nothing new. It's been this way for many years. It's one of those well known facts. As to why they do it. So they can sell more powder. The Hodgon equivalents of Winchester powders are usually cheaper.

I believe H110 got the name 110 because it was developed for the 110 grain 30 carbine load originally.

If you look at current reloading manuals, you will see the 296 and H110 load data are exactly the same, same max load, same pressure, same velocity. Walks like a duck....

When did they change the packaging to say rifle? The information on the website is under handgun powder and the bottle looks like the one shown several posts ago but says "handgun" on it not "rifle"

To the op what is the lot number on your can of 296 i have one i got at cabelas i think in wv the one close to wheeling.My lot number is 1062515 2256 and my label say,s rifle.Maybe a misprint?

If you have a serious need for your heavy revolver saving your life in thick bear country. Then 296/110 is your good friend. For playing around and higher volume practice , not so much.
It used to be the only handgun powder that I bought for pushing 2 decades.

My guess why its labeled a rifle powder is back in the day when it was introduced there was no real need for it in handguns of the day.

I wouldn't worry too much about the label, look at the SR series of IMR pounders SR 7625,SR4756, SR4759 are and were used in hangun and shotgun loading way more than rifle loadings and the SR stands for SPORTING RIFLE. A couple years back I posted that IMR was discontinuing the Sporting Rifle series of powders, the comments from the uninformed was funny, rude but funny.

I use W296/h110 on my TCM.
I don't worry about how they are labeled. I been loading shotgun powder in my handguns for YEARS (unique)

Don't go telling everyone that Green Dot is a great handgun powder. Need older Alliant manuals for load data but it's there.
