First good loads in My 30-30

Hey everyone, I finaly got to shoot some BP loads in the rifle that I made, I think the loads can improve but would like some input from the experienced BP cartridge loaders here. My load: Lee C-309-150-F PCd sized 310, 40 gr by weight BP made from Paulownia charcoal (very fast and clean burning) 1/4" compression, PPU brass, S&B LRM primers, OAL 2.418, with a medium crimp. So far the biggest problem seems to be keeping the powder fouling soft. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Oh the rifle has a 24" 1:10 twist barrel. The groups were shot off sand bags.

The pc'd bullet isn't doing anything for the fouling. You might try SPG, Randy Rats Black Tac, or homemade emmerts improved on the bullet for fouling control. ANother Black powder technique that may help is blow tubing with 2-3 long slow breaths to add moisture to the bore fouling between shots. Some wipe between shots also. A card wad grease cookie and another thin card wad may help a lot to.

I pan lube with the bees wax, crisco and lanolin mixure, I just don't think the boolit can hold enough, I may try the grease cookie, could it be made with the same lube?

Yes an easy way is to use a brownie pan with water in it on the stove. Set it up so you have a mark at the thickness of grease cookie you want. Heat the pan and water melting lube on it till its the thickness you want. let cool completely and remove with a spatula setting on a towel to dry. Another way is wax paper a couple rails the desired thickness another sheet of wax paper and a pastry roller and roll out to thisckness of the rails. A grease cookie around .090 thick should be plenty.

I have found that the RCBS 30 cal. cowboy bullet works very well with black powder. Big lube grooves, and properly sized. Duplex loaded with a little RE7 and I can shoot my lever guns all day with it.

I make the BP, it is the same that I use in my 50 cal ML only I took it down from 2F to 3F for the cartridge loading. It is made from Paulownia wood charcoal, a good grade sulfur and KN03. I have been making it for about 2 years now it burns faster and cleaner than Goex.

10 Percent of the black powder charge is a good rule of thumb. Reduce the black an equal amount.
