    7.35 carcano favorites?

Luckily i have quite a few j-words for this that I got from a member here. That said, i am still gunna cast for it. Plan is to cast 309 boolits and size to 301. Anyone have fave molda for this caliber or experience?

I use the 7.62x39 155gn Lee bullet sized down to .300 and lubed with LLA for my 7.35 rifle and get good accuracy and no leading.

I have just purchased a 7.35 M38 too and also intend to size down the larger 30 cal molds, but i have also just got a Lee .285 130grain mold and intend to lap that one out to fit. Just another option, maybe.

Curious to see how that works. That would be closer to the military bullet size and weight.

    ..............I've got a M38 Carcano FC (Fucile Corto) in 7.35 x 51, I've had for quite a few years:

I think I'll probably be selling it here in the next couple of months too

The sights are set up to hit a human target out to 350 yards if used with the top of the front blade even with the top of the 'V' in the rear sight. You have to bury the blade to hit at closer ranges. Easiest fix is to put some Steel Bed or other putty type epoxy on the front blade. When hard you form it with a file, then take it to the range and file the epoxy down to put you where you want to be.

I have the Lyman mould for it, the .301136, but have had better luck with sized down 30 cal boolits. Possible reason is thatthe GC shank on the Lyman slug is too small to securely hold the 30 cal GC. My Carcano's barrel slugs .292" x .301" and a problem could be in stuffing a 30 cal cast slug with a .300" nose. You can use the Lee C309-120-R and not worry about it. I eventually made myself a nose sizer to reduce the nose OD. To use 30 cal cast you WILL need to acquire a push through type sizer. THat way you lube-size to .308" and then run the lubed slug up through the .301" die.

BTW, a good load for that 120gr slug is 8.0 grs of Red Dot. Depending upon what your lead cost you, even with the primer and GC it's as cheap as today's 22RF Another good slug is the Lee C309-150-F. Again, 8.0/Red Dot = 1282 fps. 25.0 IMR4227 = 2236 fps and 17.0 H2400 = 1830, 12.0 SR7625 = 1551 fps, 23.0 H4198 = 2020 fps.

    Then the Lee C309-160-R:

    Surp IMR 4198, 23 gr =1530 fps
    SR4759, 30.0 = 1924fps
    IMR4227, 25.0 = 2190 fps
    Unique, 12.0 = 1615 fps
    H-4198, 23.0 = 2009 fps
    2400, 17.0 = 1825 fps
    Surp 4895, 32.0 = 2064 fps
    IMR 3031, 33.0 = 2286 fps

    Lyman 311291, 173gr RNGC:

    IMR 4227, 20.0 = 1810 fps
    Surp 4895, 30.0 = 1975 fps
    IMR 4064, 30.0 = 2157 fps
    Surp WC 852 (slow) = 1650 fps

    Hornady 123gr SPFB:

    Surp 4895, 35.7 = 2043 fps
    IMR3031, 33.0 = 2361 fps
    Surp WC852 (slow) 47.0 = 2367 fps
    Surp WC846, = 2303 fps
    IMR 4320, 35.0 = 2226 fps

Looks like 3031 comes pretty close to the military loading. I worked up some loads for J-words with Ramshot TAC that Ibhave not tested yet. Need to dig the lead sled out so i can fire it using a string....not because the loads are hit, I am just paranoid when it comes to load developement based solely on case capacity and bore expansion ratio.

Buckshot, i still need to get that push through sizer from you, i have just been on the road since i contacted you.

I have the Lyman mold 300136 but it's a stupid design that uses a 7mm gas check.

I have found the best way to gas check the 300136 is to use two of them. Slip a 7mm check onto the shank, then slip a .308" gas check over it. When run through .301" sizer, the gas checks will conform to .301" diameter and be seated very tight. I am more than satisfied with resulting accuracy.

Hang Fire - Could you tell me about your sighting arrangements on that rifle please?

My uncle gave me one of those he won on a punch board. I found some ammo and shot it about 10 times, but it was stolen in 1992. I don't miss it all that much.

I built the scope mount, had to be a little high and offset to the left for enbloc clip clearance.

I made up the scope mount by cutting off and using part of Sun optics Sport 340 mount (from Amazon) then retrofitted for the Carcano. Scope is an old k-1.2 Weaver. Mount had to be a bit high and offset to the left for enbloc clip clearance.

The axial alignment between the centerline of the scope and the bore of the rifle can be hair pulling time, so I just got close as I could.

Ok Hang Fire, I admire your determination. It's difficult to hang a scope on one of those.
