    Lyman mold problem...

The set screw for the sprue screw keeps backing out. Then the sprue screw does the same.

    Suggestions?

Drill and tap a set screw for the set screw?

    Hmmmm....

Maybe try a few other screws in the set screw hole to see if it is just that screw.

Failing that, drill it out to the next size larger and retap.

You could stake it lightly or take the set screw and deform the threads slightly so that they are a tighter fit in the threaded hole.

Take one strand of steel wool and put it in the hole prior to the set screw.

    Yeah, what Devon said.

Or a small wad of aluminum foil or brass foil/shim stock.

I have had that problem simply buy a longer set screw at the hardware store and a nut set the spue plate screw then tighten the set screw and install the nut using it to jam the set screw.

Yep - I like these ideas. The steel wool or superdan's idea as a first quick remedy. Very lightly peen a thread or two, try. Peen more IF Needed for an interference fit.

I had a feeling if I checked back I would learn sumptn.

Steel wood idea or some thin copper wire. These will get you by for the short term.

country gent has a good fix. I picked up a used mould that had that done and it works great.

Mark and file a flat spot on the sprue plate screw that the set screw contacts. Using a piece of copper wire between the set screw and sprue screw works but i suspect your threads are worn enough that this won't matter. The only other idea not suggested is to retap to the next larger size.

Try the steel wool strand , I didn't believe it would work.... but it has solved several mould screw getting loose problems. After doing it they have stayed tight .

I purchased a longer set screw and a nut. Problem solved. Now if I could find what's on the mold face that's causing the small bit of flash.
