Anyone cast for 458 socom?

I'll be getting a 458 socom AR in the future, and I'm wondering if anyone casts for them?

If so, what moulds do you use?

I am just getting in to the .458 Socom so I looked for a mold that would feed in the AR-15 action I ordered a mold from Accurate a 46-295S and 46-325S mold I want the barrel to get here some to see how this works out

They seem to be a gas checked design. 45 caliber gas check or would that be too small?

Currently using the 46-350VG and 46-405VG from Accurate, NOE 460-350RF and the Mihec .462 Hammer. All gas checked. Lot of good 45-70 designs and some .458socom specific designs that will work. I just always use a gas check and I like big metplats. All I use for checks anymore is the copper .458 cal checks made by Gator. They will crimp on tighter than say Hornady .45 checks, especially if you size .460".

I suggest saving yourself some hassle and getting a barrel/bolt or complete upper from Tromix and use Lancer magazines.

What is the difference between that upper and any other higher end upper? Or any upper for that matter?

The upper I'm getting is specifically for 458 so it's got an enlarged ejection port and such

Nothing special about the upper receiver itself, why I said complete upper. The ejection port just needs to be opened up on the upper receiver. The bolt assembly(bolt, extractor, ejector) and the barrel assembly is the important part. Some companies use the approved chambering reamer dimensions and some use the reverse engineered reamer. Tromix was one of the originators of the .458 soc so they know how to do it right. Plus the prices for a barrel and bolt are reasonable. Tromix isn't the only one out there using the right chamber dimensions, I can tell you who else is.

Been doing it for a while, started mostly with the Lee 500 gr. gas checked bullet but also got an old Lyman mould that made 390 gr. RN with a GC. I shot them with regular lube and they worked well in my RRA SOCOM upper. In the pic below you can see the two bullets un-loaded and loaded in SOCOM cases.




I now Hi-Tek coat everything and still use a gascheck. I recently started messing with the NOE 350 gr. RD mould I got for my 45-70. In the pic below you can see the Lee 500 gr. RN un-loaded and loaded in a SOCOM case and you can also see the NOE bullet loaded in a 45-70.

Have you tried the collier button boolit in the .458 SOCOM

No I have not tried the collar button bullet in the SOCOM. It is too light to try in the SOCOM as I would have to use lots of powder and push it fast to get it to function. I would certainly use it in a single shot or bolt gun in SOCOM where I didn't need to worry about it functioning the action. Even then it would still be a low velocity plinker.

When I bought my 330grain HP mold from midway, there were a few reviews that claimed success in the 458socom. I have no experience with it in a semi, but they shoot well in my 1895G. I don't know what the socoms velocity range is, but these hp do not function well much faster than 1400fps. If you want to go faster, you need a harder alloy (than the 20:1 I like) and the thing will fragment explosively, but will leave a nice 200ish grain base to drive through. I just wouldn't plan to eat whatever I shot.

I've run the Gould 330 gr bullet Ateam mentioned and a LEE 500 gr. Both were HiTek coated. I got the 330 up to around 1400-1500 fps. I'd have to check my notes on charge weight but it was a WLP primer with IMR 4198 powder.

The 500 (actually about 485 as cast) overshot my plans for subsonic by a long shot. I started low using the same powder and primer and ended up sending that freight train of a bullet down range at almost 1300 fps. Didn't cycle though and had fairly light recoil. I'm running a 12" Tromix setup.

Get your parts from either Tromix or RRA. As far as I know, they're the only ones licensed by Teppo Jutsu to sell the caliber. Also buy Redding dies. The Lee ones are junk for this caliber. Every single sized case got stuck in the chamber (even fresh out of the die, no bullet) The Redding sized cases fed flawlessly. The Lee expander die is helpful though for cast boolits.

i use the Redding die without the sizer ball to size the outside, run it through the Lee expander die, use the Redding seater to set it where I want it, then remove the seating stem to crimp the case. Doing seating and crimping in one motion ended up pushing it too deep or shaving the bullet.

Tromix and RRA are not the only companies using the approved reamer. SBR and the Satern barrel Brownells sells uses it too, some others as well but I can't remember all of them. I wouldn't recommend RRA with the problems that have been reported with the them over the last couple years. Plus IMO they are overpriced.

Well, I did say AFAIK. I do know there are different readers running around. Lee obviously used the wrong one for their dies.

I've had that Gould at 1400 with just 34.0 of IMR 4198. I've been testing it slowly. Data is limited and I haven't splurged on QuickLoad yet (I know I need to). That was in a 12" Tromix.

The Lee flew out at around 1300 fps with 20.0 of IMR 4198. I was planning on subsonic, so it'll need more work up. Also, it wouldn't cycle, even with a pistol length gas system.

Used a few the NOE 460-378-RN- GC seems to work the best. Feeds well no problems with seating depth and generally easy to work with.

Let's get this thread going again! My go-to 458 load has always been Hornady 325g FTX. We picked up a second rifle in the family recently so we decided to work up some cast loads anticipating we'd be going through a lot more ammo!

This old LEE 458-405HP still throws really nice boolits. Used many years for 45-70 Trapdoors. Im hard casting these now for SOCOM.
Still working on it, but so far excellent results. My approach has been to keep it simple. No gas check, ALOX lube.

I've got it up to 39gr H4198, haven't chronographed it yet. Pressure indicators look good, No lead fowling, no bore residue. I an very surprised there's almost no residue issues in the bolt carrier, chamber is cleaner than expected, and accuracy is good.

Well I have continued with cast in my SOCOM.

So here is a NOE Mould that is specifically for making bullets for coating designated HTC. In the pic below they are coated in Hi Tek Bronze 500 and gas checked. These come out at 360 grs when finished.



I also got a 500 gr. SP HTC mould to make heavy subsonic loads in the SOCOM. This is also coated in Hi Tek Bronze 500



And finally the same two bullets powder coated and loaded in SOCOM cases. The crimp groove in the lighter bullet is there for loading in the 45-70 so it is showing.

That NOE345 RG is probably THE bullet for 458S. I want one.

RCBS 45-325 FN is nice,too. Basic little plinker.

The 480 Applegate to the left is a bit challenging because of the nose. It feeds and fires and works but gets beaten up a bit in Tromix. Working on it.

Yes I cast NOE 460-350 HP's for full power loads.. and the Lee 500 grn pointed for subsonic loads
the 500 grainers are a hoot to shoot and a bear to stop. At 50 yds they will go thru 2ft of hard packed sand, a 8-10" telephone pole and stop about 2 to 4 ft on the other side

the bullet to the right is a recovered rd after going thru the 2ft of sand
