    New Thermometer

Getting ready to get a thermometer, and seen this new Lyman Digital

    http://www.midwayusa.com/product/451...ad-thermometer

Was going to get the regular Lyman, which I'm leaning toward.
Saw the Tel-Tru, also, they probably make the Lyman.

Thoughts comments, appreciated. Anyone have the Lyman digital??

Probably work fine but were it me I'd spring for a VOM that also reads temperature.

I would just get the rcbs, very little to go wrong and no hassle lifetime warranty if anything ever does. Anything that's around a hot lead pot I would be inclined to have be more durably built than that thermometer looks to be.

Yeah the RCBS sounds good, never considered the warranty. NOE sells the Tel-Tru, Amazon has TT for $22, no free shipping though, that's when I seen they carried the Lyman w free shipping $34.99. Now I seen they carry the RCBS $41.49, same price as Midway on sale, but free shipping. So that's what it'll be.
The Lyman digital didn't really seem to durable, kind of reminded me of those free multimeters you get with Harbor Freight coupons.

The last I new the RCBS is made in the good old USA. The Lyman is made in China. You decide.

We have one that looks similar at work. We use it for our solder pots. Works fine.

Have the RCBS and I love it. It has been through many years of casting and still giving me good service.

I`m still using temp gauges from boilers, that read up to 1000 degrees, that I salvaged about 30 years back.Robert

I hated to spent $45+ on my Lyman thermometer. It was new, old stock, at the gunstore. I noticed that it was USA made and is replaced with a China one, at the store.Mine had to have sat there for years and probably their new one will too.

Simple to do and a great idea Would a little stand to put the temp display more upright make it easier to read?

    Furnace pot cover or not?

Covering a pot makes it heat faster and reduces oxidation. I have a Lee Pro4 pot that I made a little cover for. Does anybody cover their pot while casting?

I bought the RCBS and it has worked flawlessly, I would be VERY hesitant with ANY thing Lyman, due to their warranty/CS or lack there of

Rotometals also carry a thermometer, there is a short YouTube clip on their web page, the guy says that it is made by the same Co. that makes the RCBS thermometer, The one from Rotometals looks absolutely identical to my RCBS

I've read that almost all the thermometers we use are made by (TelTrue) one company. The difference being the name printed on the face. I have three and they don't agree at all. One reads accurately at low temps, but is drasticly off at casting temps. The other two are lineor but off over the whole scale by over 50*.
That being the case, they work as reference tools, but can't is trusted as accurate temp measurement tools.
    Information not shared. is wasted.

I have the RCBS unit, as I had heard too may stories about the Lyman not holding up well. I have used the heck out of the RCBS unit and I have had no problems so far.
