45-70 collar bullet loads and starline brass

I ordered a NOE 460-186 mold and some Starline brass. Planning on using Unique powder. Do I need to anneal the brass?

Any advice on these loads would be apperciated.

I also use 10 grs. of Unique for my NOE Collar Buttons and never annealed the starline cases. I HiTek coat my collar button and lightly crimp with a Redding profile crimp. The 10 grs. of Unique gives me 975 fps. out of my MArlin 1895 SBL.

Curious here, how well do these cycle through a marlin, and what kind of accuracy would be expected, say at 50 yards and under?

Mine cycle fine through my 1895 SBL and since I have a scope on mine I can usually get some touching at 50 yds. so they shoot well.

I use 4227 since I couldn't find unique during the powder shortage. I also barely crimp. They cycle beautifully and are accurate enough for small game hunting should I ever desire.

    GARD72977:
I have found that NOT annealing new Starline .45-70 brass would result in sooty-sided cases and some black powder residue blown into my rifle's action. Perhaps some batches are different but Starline brass is great stuff regardless. Certainly wiht .45 Colt, .40-65 Win,. and .45-70, annealing the case mouths can't hurt. Neck tension is better and cases last much longer.

I use a Lee crimp die and the short Hornady brass for squib loading .
cut 0.050" off the inner cylinder of the Lee and it works perfect.

Crimping shortens case life as the mouth gets worked too much, it is not required unless you are using some very heavy kicking loads in you levergun.

I anneal for black powder but do not bother with the smokeless loads. I have a collar button myself that I just poured some the other day for but have not had a chance to load them yet.

No need to anneal but it'll shoot better with Bullseye.......I found that out using RBs, button bullets and Rapine 460210s. Start at 4 gr and work up to 8 gr in 1/2 gr increments. No need for fillet or wad.

I know this is old, but with a small load of quick powder, in a single shot ( no 1) wouldn't it be ok, and maybe better, to use a dowel or something andpress the boolit/ round ball down, maybe almost to the powder... I was thinking this would give more consistent ignition, therefore better accuracy. I know it would raise pressures, but we are talking about 10gr or less of unique, or maybe 7-8grs of bullseye or less. I would really enjoy shooting these loads, and saving money on powder and lead, not to mention, it would be great for the possums and coons raiding our hen house!! you would be surprised at how many 38spl 158gr SWC's a tough coon can take! it's truly scary!
