I trust my reloading abilities and my common sense. Powder is still available and experimenting with an unknown, potentially dangerous powder just isn't something do, as an adult. 40 years ago I might have tried it (here, hold my beer and watch this) but not today. Besides, I don't have any high tech equipment to measure pressures, etc....

    Hmm. Let's see; 4 lbs powder, $100.00? Cost of a new 629? $950.00...

Check here http://www.ilrc.ucf.edu/powders/index.php I used their data base once to figure out some powder but its pretty time consuming and hard on the eyes and I already had it narrowed down to a list of powders it had to be.

Start with 4grs of mystery powder in a 22H with a 40gr cast boolit and check velocity. If you get good powder burn and over 1400 fps it's a very fast powder. If vel is lower and burn is not complete, move up in powder charge until burn is complete or velocity gets high or case gets full. If none happens, it's a medium or slow powder. Next switch to a 223Rem and 10grs of mystery powder and work up. If you still can't get clean burn or vel, it's a slow powder and you move up to a 308Win. Sooner or later you will get a good idea of burn rate and will have a powder you can use. 1 lb probably isn't worth the effort. 4 lbs and I would find a use. The 50 lbs I was given as mystery powder was not going to get thrown out and the two types I was given are working very well.
Hopefully, every time you reload, you work up to a stop point. This is little different. You just have to start as if the mystery powder is very fast until you prove differently.

I love saving money but for $100 worth of powder (that's if you knew what it is) I'd say it's fertilizer. powder just isn't all that expensive especially 4 lbs.

With a smile on my face and charity in my heart, I'm going to refrain from any Gump references and advise to just grow some nice tomatoes with it.

but who knows? there are a lot of powders I ain't seen.
I take it you've never seen AA3100, or MR 3100 or as it was originally marketed as Mag Rifle(not in any way to be confused with Win Mag Rifle from 1990's) AA3100 is an extruded powder very similar to IMR 4831 in appearance, kernels are of VERY similar size.
