Loading for the old Marlin .444 today.

Have to shoot yet. The RD 265 at .433" was hard to chamber but sized at .431" they fit good. I was sure I had a .432" but not. I swore I had all sizes. We will shoot tomorrow with AA2230, 5744 and 4198. Just below max loads.
My friend has factory loads and the bullets are all different.
I hope the RD will shoot.

As you can see the MG barrels run big and that is why the Marlins have a bad reputation for not shooting cast worth a hoot.
My Marlin 94 44MAG 1972 gun on the other hand slugs .4295" so i'm golden
The RD moulds are made to accomodate the Marlins and my 240gr casts in the .433-.434" range.

Yes! Avoid:

- SWC designs ~ apparently some Marlins don't mind them but mine did... didn't feed worth a hoot!
- watch OAL as Marlins do not like anything over factory OAL unless you modify the cartridge stop
- slug your barrel but you will likely need moulds that cast at no less than 0.433" (that large groove diameter is a SAAMI spec, but who knows why?)
- don't use boolits over about 270 gr. in 1:38" twist barrels

I modified my carrier so the gun would feed the Mihec H$G #503 and modified the cartridge cartridge stop to allow longer OAL.

My best success to date is with the H&G #503 at 258 grs. solid and the Mihec 434640 RNFP at 270 gr. solid. The H&G #503 feeds pretty reliably now with the gun modified but the Mihec 434640 feeds slick, if I had gotten that mould first I would not have modified the gun! Both boolits give good accuracy. The RanchDog 265 gr. design should also do very well.

Larger boolits were hard to chamber but .431" fit better. Chamber is tight.

My neighbor is a skinny man and got beat green until he bought a pad. Overhangs the stock some but he is happy now. He wants to buy a mold and I ask "WHY" use mine. But you need to get the checks. I don't go to the belt to get metal.

For sure but less recoil then 4198. I think it is close to 3031. Yes drive the .444 to jacketed.
