    More old powder- H570

I've been trying to use up old powder I've had for quite some time. Here's some I've had in the back of the powder magazine for a decade and a half, and it was pretty old when I got it. Notice the price tags: $1.88 per pound.

I'm thinking I'll see if I can work up a usable load in .300 Win Mag with some 200 gr bullets I've also had laying around, though from what I've been able to find for data it looks a bit slow for anything that I have.

    Anyone ever use it?

Sorry, I have no suggestions, but if you later find that you have no use for the empty tins I'd sure like to add one or all to a display I'm working on.

Not exactly what you're after, but P.O. Ackley handbook for shooters and reloaders does give 2 loads for 300 win mag with H570, with 220gr bullets.

    300 winmag, 220gr bullet, 78.6 gr for 2400 fps, and 81.7gr for 2500 fps.

    Hope this helps.

Look in your Hodgdon's manual#23, lots of data there

    300 Win Mag-26 inch barrel
    200 gr bullet-H570 83.0 grs-2725 fps-51.1K CUP

shows no staring loads just max, data starts at 150 grain bullets in 300WM

And Hodgdon shows 81.0-2541 fps-52.6 K CUP for 220 gr bullet. Looks like Parker and Bruce were on the same page as far as H570 was concerned.

If you look in your Speer #7 manual you will find data for 6.5 Swede, 270 and many, many more cartridges. I think it shows highest published velocity for any powder in 264 Win Mag with 140 gr bullet(3313fps), not bad in 7mm Rem either.

Just checked there is some data in Hornady #2 and Speer #6. Just like looking for gold, a guy might have to dig a little!

Thanks guys, good info. I found a little myself as well, in some old manuals. I have some rounds loaded up in increments, ready to go to the range with the chronograph when the weather permits. I have a couple other powders I'm going to try as well- AA8700 and WC872. It looks like they're all pretty similar in burning rate.

The one issue I had loading up a few rounds with H570 is getting it all in the case. I don't know how I could fit 83 grains, as 80 grains is a pretty heavily compressed load. I did have to seat the bullets fairly deep, since what I have are long BTHP bullets and they have to be seated deep enough to fit in my Winchester model 70 magazine. I'll report back how it works out, but it may be a while til I get out there next.

With 5010 in several cartridges I've used a vibrating back masager to settle the powder, electric razor or tooth brush should work too.

Fatelk, if you want any data for other cartridges you can't find just shoot a PM, glad to help if I can. The 270 with 150 grains and up looks interesting.

The heaviest load of H570 that I could fit in a .300 Win Mag case was 80 grains. I clocked a few loads today and that 80gr produced 2479 fps. The 8700 and WC872 were both faster but none of them were very close to top velocities. All I really did today was find out where I could start. At some point when I get time I'll just forget about velocity and find a load that shoots good to use it up.

I'll bet it might work OK in a 7mm Mag, which I don't have, with heavy bullets. I could try some in my .270 Win.

H570 and H870 were basically the same burn rate powder in extruded and ball respectively. Both are 20mm WW II surplus and the extruded ran out way earlier than the ball. I think the last lot of H570 that left Hodgdon was in 1974. H870 stayed around until well into the 90s before being replaced by H1000 and H50bmg. If you use starting charges for H870 as your starting point you should be safe in working up loads for H570.

    160-gr. Speer 284-160-6-SP - 79.0 to 83.0 - 2962 to 3113

He's going to have to settle(vibrate) the powder in the case to get 83.0 gr in 7Mag case if can't get but 80 into the 300 Win with its larger capacity.

150-gr. Speer 277-150-6-SP - 61.0 to 65.0 - 2672 to 2820 fps THIS LOOKS VERY INTERESTING. I get 2710 fps with 63.0 grs of surplus 5010, win LRM primer and the 150 Speer, have to vibrate the case to get it in neck far enough to get bullet started to seat.

5010 and H570 are kissing cousins so I'm not surprised your 270 data is right smack on speer's numbers.

Thanks everyone! You all are a wealth of information. With this data I'm sure I'll find a good use for it sooner or later. Even if not ideal for producing top velocities, if I can work up some accurate loads I'll be happy.
