    Does the direction matter?

When using an off-cut left over from shortening a rifle barrel as a blank, does it matter from which end to chamber?
I have an off-cut which I wanted to use for a project. It was cut off to shorten a fluted barrel and the flutes begin about 1" from the muzzle, so the natural choice would be to chamber and thread the round area near the muzzle. Does it matter that I will be using the barrel in reverse direction of the original?

Depending on length I doubt you will see much taper there. Slug each end and see what you have. The taper in a rifles bore is consistant over the entire length so 4-8" of left over wont show much taper maybe a ten thousands or so.

I have seen barrels chambered on both ends that could be unscrewed and flipped around.

Wow, never heard of those. Can you provide more info on what those were? How did they shoot?
