I'd sight the rifle to hit at the average range the targets appear .

I keep my 17 zeroed at 100 yards.

One inch high at 100 yds. I've killed several crows to 150 yds with 17 HMR. 17 Hornet should work past 200yds same setting.

Look a the trajectory of the load being used. Then at the vital area of the given targets. Point blank range can then be figured to where a shot can be fired over a distance aiming dead on, up close it may be a couple inches high and at distance a couple inches low. Some older loading manuals gave this in the trajectory tables in the back. An 1 1/2 high at 100yds may allow dead aiming out to 200yds or a little more.

It's funny that so many cartridges do so well with a 100 yard zero impacting 1.5-2" high.
IIRC when I had my 17HMR I think the drop at 200 yards was about 4-5".
I never had much time beyond 100 yards.
Inside 100 yards it was point and shoot.

Zeroed at 100 yards the 17 HMR drops 8 1/2" to 10" inches as 200 yards depending on bullet http://www.varmintal.com/17hmr.htm

Thanks for the replies, think I'll set both 1.5-2'' high at 100 and go from there.
