I melted several of those down a few weeks ago and ended up with .2% tin in the alloy.

Excellent point. Good source of meltable metal!

More reasons than a few holes from nails why they don't reuse them. One if you reuse you can't sell a new one.
#2 is the biggie, If you reuse you can't give them to a bullet caster.

I've gotten a few new ones from the local Home Depot.
When they get too smashed & bent to sell they throw 'em in the trash.
The manager for the department has given me a few smashed ones just for asking.

I melt all roof flashing and vent boots separately outside. It usually has tar and paint on it and smokes a good bit. I melt in 3lb coffee cans in fire. Pour melted metal out under crud, then throw can away. They will only stand one use before they leak themselves.

Well, a good friend to have is a roofer.
My neighbor is a roofer and has supplied me with a bunch of old lead flashing and roof jacks that have lead sheeting soldered to them.

I cut out all the soldered joints and melt them separately for a source of tin.

The other lead is melted and poured into muffin pan ingots.
The lead tested at 5-6 BHN.
The solder joints came in at BHN: 7.8

I did this with plumbing pipe and traps. I cut out all the soldered joints and rendered them separate.

    I sent a sample to @BNE, it came back 95% Pb,5%Sn.
    Perfect 20-1. Well, 19-1 actually.

    Well worth the effort.
