    44 Alpen, any info?

Hey guys, I heard about an old .429 wildcat, the 44 Alpen. Supposedly it's based on either a 300 win mag or a h&h mag case with a .429 bullet on top, but i cant find any other info on it no matter how hard I search. So, do any of you know about 44 Alpen? What case is it actually based on, maybe case dimensions, or if one has ever been seen in the wild? Maybe even a picture?

    Too new to be known?
Or dead for so long, it's forgotten.
I did a web search and found nothing.

I believe it was from the late 50's. I have heard a few references to it, but I am looking at building a wildcat, and it sounds very much like what 44Alpen is supposed to be. Trying to see if it performed well for anyone but the guy who built it...

I found no mention of it in either Donnelly's Manual of Cartridge Conversions or the 8th ed. of Cartridges of the World. That's not saying it isn't a real cartridge, just that it wasn't in those two books.

It does seem like I have read of a similar round, but no idea where.

The only problem I see with a .429" belted mag is there is a dearth of 350+ grain jacketed projectiles, unless you swage your own.

Yeah bullets are a little hard to find in the heavyweight class, so I will be swaging my own if I build this thing.

You got me curious so I did a search and came up with this:

    https://www.google.ca/search?q=.44+a...zx5oSAwwx_M%3A

rather long but it will take you to a page with a photo of a .44 Alpen.

I was thinking more along the lines of .444 rimless for my wants but this is certainly interesting.

Thanks Longbow, that is literally the only online reference I could find about it, but I had lost the address! I also haven't been able to find the article from gun world news about it. But I heard a snippet about it in a 444 thread. Thanks for the search, it really sounds interesting.

    Here's another one:

    https://www.shootersforum.com/wildca...-shortmag.html

I couldn't find the reference to the 44 Alpen but there's quite a discussion of the different wildcats using 40+ caliber bullets. That's all a google search came up with besides this one.
