    Liquid Alox and leading

So I am starting to load a 303brit with 200gr GC bullets. For simplicity I have been using the liquid Alox that I have getting with my lee sizer dies. I have been doing two coatings and I am concerned with the actual amount of lube on the bullets, mainly is there enough. My hottest load thus far has been 1860fps and it doesn't appear to be leading that much, my bore is kinda rough but accuate enough. How fast should a guy go with Alox? Anyone use this stuff for rifles? I shoot black powder and do have a beeswax mixture for those guns just wondering if Alox is fine or should I mix up some harder lube for the smokeless guns.

    thanks

I use it in my 77/357 up to 1800fps with 158gr boolits, no issues.

    if it's working it's working.
you'll have to try pushing it to find out when it doesn't work in your application.
I have heard of it going well over 2-K fps, and of it failing at 750 fps.

Bullet fit is king, if your bullet fits the alox will work.

But the easy way is to read some of the thread on Ben's Liquid Lube if you can find a can of Johnson's one step.

+1 on bullet fit. I use LLA at 2200 fps in my M1 Garand with better grouping than Ball M2 if bullets ard of suitable alloy and FIT!

I have a tumble lube Ranch Dog 135-rf for 9mm. It casts out at .359 and I run it in my 357 rifle at 2100 fps. Alox works fine, except when I try to soften the alloy I get lead wash the last few inches of the barrel and no lube star on the crown. When the alloy is too soft, the lube groves obturate and pump out all the alox too soon. WDWW is hard enough to get a lube star and good accuracy.

This is the best reply, and mirrors my experience except I never tried pushing it that fast, 1500-1600 max for me. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I quite using it.

I have been using ALOX for my 308 pushing 30 XCB at 1850 fps just one light coat zero leading and have compared it to other lubes for accuracy have not found any reason to switch

I keep my LLA lubed bullets under 2000fps and like you, I use two coats. One before the sizing and gas-checking and then a second coat afterwards. I have never had any leading with my rifle bullets with that procedure. I use LLA in my 8mm-06; 8x57; 32 Win Special; 7.7 Arisaka; 308 Win; 30-06; 303 British; 6.5 Arisaka; 6.5 Swede and 223 Remington rifle loads. As long as I keep the velocity below 2000, I never have a problem with these rifles. If I want to load them hotter, I use White Label Lubes specific lube for 2500 and 2700fps in my Lyman 45.

I think you're first quote says alot on this issue, my bore is not the best or a little rough. Lap the bore and then fit the bullet and you will find a clean bore there after.
