First deer with a handgun today

I killed my first deer with a handgun today. I killed a small doe at 40 yards with a Glock Model 40 MOS, it is their long slide 10mm. I was shooting HPR 180gr XTP hollowpoints. She was quartering hard away from me, more than I realized. The bullet entered the right side, near the rear of the ribs and stopped under the shoulder on the left side. She mule kicked and went she went to run, I fired again, this round hit her in the spine and took out a 2" section of her spine. She went about 20 feet.

BKS, good shooting! Can you post a picture of the bullet you recovered? What do you think the muzzle velocity was? Thanks, Treetop

Ive read where they have been chrono'd at around 1100-1170. I believe if I hadn't shot her at such an angle it would have exited. Click image for larger version.

Never occurred to me deer could be taken with a 10mm. Makes sense now that I think about it.

10mm is probably the best "common" round in a semiauto pistol. There are others like the .45 magnum in the Grizzly, but they are not seen often.

The 10mm does wonderfully with heavy cast bullets. The 200 gn WFN MiHec group buy mold is the cat's meow.

I have read reports of many using 10mm for deer. It is close to the potential of a .357 magnum. Less sectional density, but wider bullet. For sure a .357 mag can do it, so why not a 10mm?

10mm stretched to an AR platform would be nice too! Good shooting sir!
Got a .22 .30 .32 .357 .38 .40 .41 .44 .45 .480 or .500 S&W cylinder that needs throats honed? 9mm, 10mm/40S&W, 45 ACP pistol barrel that won't "plunk" your handloads? 480 Ruger or 475 Linebaugh cylinder that needs the "step" reamed to 6° 30min chamfer? too late to get in on this I guess.

These rounds were the only ones I could find locally, Im ordering some Underwood 200gr WFN later today. 1250 fps in a 4" so maybe a lil faster in the long slide.

I would not be in the least afraid to shoot a deer with the .40sw Hipoint carbine 100 yards or closer. Almost instant follow up, 175 gr cast lead boolit mostly range scrap with 1.5 to 2% tin.

It would good in the thick stuff.

Congrats on the deer! As a lifelong handloader, of the 3 big selling autos (9MM, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP) the .40 is the clear ballistic champ, that being said the 10MM is a stretched .40, if i were to hunt deer with an auto pistol it would be a .40 or better yet the 10MM

Congrats. Getting one with a pistol is one of the things on my to do list. I have had the opportunity several times but never was able to close the deal. I know my ability and range with the pistol I was carrying at the time and never could get a shot opportunity I was comfortable with.
