mold for 30-30

Hi guys, Its been a very long time since I have been on here (been in so much pain i have not been able to cast) I want to teach my so in law how to cast as he will be getting a lot of my collection when Im no longer around. I just picked up a 336 in 30-30 (made in 2003) for 350.00 at a pawn shop and want to add a mold to my collection for him to cast with.

I dont have a preference at this point as to round nose or flat point or weight so I just wanted to ask those who already cast for the 30-30, what their preference is. Should I be looking for a plain base or a gas check design?


I will be teaching him lubing and powder coating... I have a range of powders so thats not a problem either.

Any help would be appreciated..

GDS45, I was just looking at that one... how fast do you push yours? do you lube or powder coat? Like I said, I dont know if I want a GC or flat base so the more information I can get the better.. Thanks for the input!

Both. My 336 is same vintage as yours, Due to Marlin chamber variances, you will have fun finding a good mould for it - seating depth is the problem. Finally did a custom that appears to work good (modified RD) - 170gr PB & 185gr GC. Still working on the load/alloy but 185GC @ 2000, 170PB @1500 so far. These are PC but I also used BLL. Target from Wed. some old RD (Lee) I cast several years ago (14gr 2400, 1500 fps) vs the 170PB (9.5gr Unique, 1400fps). RD has the GC in the neck so I have a rig to prevent jamming the lands. Base of 170 is in the neck also. My shooting isn't very good with the levergun.

I have the same NOE mold and really like the boolits I get from it. Using Vulcan aluminium gas checks and powder coating, then sized to 0.311". I load them over Alliant 2400 to a velocity of 1650 fps. Very accurate, and fun to shoot in my Marlin. The NOE molds are worth the price.

My favorite load with this boolit is 34.5g of LeveRevolution. But I worked up to this load carefully.
Velocity is 2330 fps with a SD of 10. Boolits were heat treated to Bhn 27-28(Saeco 11).

The NOE molds are worth the price.

Another mould worth considering is the Lyman 311041. Sized to .310 with NRA formula lube it really shoots well in my 30/30s.

If you want to try before you buy, order the very similar Oregon Trail version. It comes sans gas check, but that's easy enough to put on and they are sized right at .310. Google "Oregon Trail" and you'll get there if you would like to try them.

Love the 165 RD in any .30 I've got, but also look at the NOE 311440.

+1 on the Lyman 311041. I load this boolit, lsized .311 and lubed with Lars Red, over 20-some grains of 5744 for both my 30-30s to equal (or better) factory loads for accuracy.

OK, I really like the NOE 311-165 but I like the NOE SC311 165 as well, does any one have the SC311? How does it fit in the Marlin with the front driving band? any issues?

I know when I first designed a mold for my 45-70 Marshal put a front driving band on it but it wouldnt cycle in my 1895 so we had to go without one.

I may need to find my pure lead and do a pound cast to see how the throat is on my rifle, will pure lead be ok or should I get that stuff that melts at a very low temp... cant remember what it was called..

I'd do the pound slug.
hardish lead up into the case neck, then a slug of soft on top for the case mouth forward.

The Lee C309-170-F works great for me in both the Marlin and Winchester Rifles. I use enough of IMR-3031 to give me 2000 fps. The load is extremely accurate and penetration on game with a Lyman #2 alloy bullet is stunning. The Lee mold is about 20 bucks, gas checks are readily available for about 40 bucks per 1000 and there are a lot of viable propellants. Have fun with your casting and loads.

I push it around 2000 to 2300~FPS over either 1200R or LVR. I use use Ben's red in my Lube a Matic or tumble lube with BLL. Shoots better than I can.

Should I use the older or newer version of Ranch Dog's 311-165RF for my 1954 vintage Marlin 336 with Ballard rifling? When I chamber a round with a Lyman 311041 seated to the crimp groove, there is slight engraving on the nose/ogive when I extract the loaded round. Thanks-

Have fun with your casting and loads" My changes are i spray the bullets with Krylon spray enamel bake them at 400 degrees and hour the reason i use Krylon is it is a thinner coating then powder coat and that long bullet nose engages the rifling . I also use soft lead the bullets weight 184 grains as cast i size them to .310 after baking while i am installing the gas check the load averages 2040 f/s and shoots under 2 M.O.A. from my 1953 Marlin 336.
