8mm mauser boolit choice and sizing questions

    Hi all!

I'm looking to reload for a M48BO (and other 8MM) mauser rifle, i'm currently looking for a mold and a sizer for this purpose. I'm looking for light loads in the 12-1400fps range to shoot a 100y with irons. The lee 329-205-1R seems a logical choice if i want to size at 0.325''.

    Here comes the questions:

    1. What is the diameter of your sized bullets that are giving good results at 100y? 0.323'' like Lee suggest or larger?

    2. What is the weight of your best bullet in this caliber?

    3. Plain based? Gas checked? By experience 12-1400fps without GC with WW is not impossible.

    thank you

My M48 has a bigger throat and shoots the NOE 326471fn and Accurate 33-205t bore rider very well. The 2 M24/47'so I have like the Lee 175 with their smaller throat. I tried the Lee 329 Karibeener, but it was too long for my rifles. I size everything to .325. You really need to do a pound cast for your rifle, choose your mold from that. I have a couple pb boolets that will shoot well at 1300fps, over 9 grains of Unique. I have the pb version of the NOE 326471rn and Accurate 175b molds. Hope that helps, Flyer

I use 324 but my 8 mauser was made by Remington.

your throat is going to dictate your boolit shape and diameter unless 1300fps is okay.

my advice is to read the sticky on how to do a pound cast.
    then do a couple.
then you have a number [diameter] to shoot for and a shape in hand.
mimic that shape and size and you'll have the best results.

    Kegcaissy:
you can try LEE custom molds 8mm Max or 8mm Karabiner. I use 8mm MAX bullet, gas-checked about 235 grs., with the load of 28 grs. of ACC5744, about 1900fps, is the question of the rifle too, of course. This powder is my favourite and works well for cast bullets in various my rifles calibers.
This LEE 8mm MAX bullet is about .3265, so you can let it be or size to .323 for .323 barrels, or for example, size to .321 for .318 barrels.

I am using the NOE 325-365 216 gr Spire Point GC and Powder Coated.
I am getting good results in most of my rifles sized to .325 out to 200 yards.
The load Load has been tested with Up to 29.0 gr of Reloader 7 and very good accuracy.
I also use the Lee 175 gr with 30.0 gr of reloader 7, but also got good results with 21.5 of 4759

As others have stated your bore size and throat will make all the difference. I have a couple Turk Mausers that have well worn throats, so I shoot the Lee max in those. But it's to long for my yugo, and k98. In those I use Lee 175.

I'm a little late for timely advice, but i would buy the Lee 175 first. Mine casts #2 alloy a full .325 that should work in most rifles unless really worn.My Karrabiner casts .329 and is to hard on my lyman 45 to go to .325. I shoot the Lee 175 in a Gew-88 with a .321 bore sized to .323. I'm going to step on some Swiss toes here and get some negative feedback, but I prefer the 88 to all my swiss rifles, and I love my Swiss guns! A good load for my 88 is 13.5gr Blue Dot with Lee 175 g check, about1425 fps and does 10 shots in 1.6 inches if i have good shooting light conditions. Other good loads for me with Lee175 are H322 at 22.5gr, RL 7 at 21-23gr, Herco and800x worked well also but I don't have their targets with load data handy.Be careful with those shotgun powders , they can build pressures fast!

I also have an 88, but mine slugs somewhere about .326, so I shoot the karrabiner unsized in it. Accuratcy is ok, but man its fun to shoot!

My best 8mm cast boolit in the 98ks, M48s, Radoms, etc., is the Lyman #323471, 215 grain RN sized .323, water quenched by dropping the boolits from the mould into a bucket of water and lubing with Alox. I use old wheelweights and a dash of tin for my boolits. My best powder charge is 25 grains of IMR4198.

LEE 175 gr. RN. I am thrilled how it performs. Drops at .325+. I run it through a .325 sizer, lube and gas check. 19 gr. 4227 gives just under 1600.
16.5 gr. 2400 is the same velocity. Set the sight at 600 meters, ring the 200 yard gong all day.

The Lyman 160gr Loverin bullet works very well in military guns. Although light in weight (which reduces recoil) it is full diameter for most of the length which helps fill the throat. I use it allong with the Lee Karabiner in my 1867 Swedish Rolling Block. The Lyman is 1 to 2 moa at 100 yards.

I haven't found a better small game/plinker. I just tumble lube as cast.

That is what I use in all my 8mm Mausers (3 German k98k and 1 Yugo 48a) and I've been very pleased with it. Typically I use it sans gas check with a light unique load so I can comment how it works at high speed.

How big this bullet drops? What is the diameter of your sizing die?

The Lee 329-205-1R mould works great in my Yugo M48 when sized to 0.327". I was getting dime-sized groups at 50 yards with 28 grains of IMR 4895 and no filler with this combination. I think I used 45/45/10 TL lube with two or three thin coats.
