Mine started doing the same today.

In celsius it should be reading 381 which it has done so for 5 or 6 sessions in the last 2 weeks. Now it reads in the 260's. If I remove the thermocouple it drops towards ambient. It was in the 60s when I had to leave it to return to work.

I suspect the wiring near the thermocouple has shorted. I've been using the one that came with the ebay kit which is the short screw in probe while my longer probe versions are in the mail.

I have been submersing it under the lead from the top and I suspect the wiring under the sheath has given out. I hope so anyway, that's the easiest fix.

This type TC is NOT designed to be immersed if that's what you have.

That's pretty close to what I have. My long probe type were supposed to arrive last Friday, the same day I built the PID so I haven't worried too much about it dropping in. The package still hasn't arrived today.

Glad to hear you got 'er going. And it's something we can all keep in mind next time someone else has trouble and needs a bit of help.

Seems like it was a thermocouple problem. I replaced with a new one and it seems to read ok, but will read 0 if the wires get bumped or something.
Anyone have a link for a good thermocouple that will work well in a deep pot?

I know Auber's has 6" probes and a google search came up with em' 12" long. Just be sure they're K type, can handle the temperatures too. Sounds a bit like a connection problem too. If your pots that deep I'd look at the stickies and maybe see about how some of the guys permanently mounted sensors on their pots. Might be a better route for your setup.
